NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR MARRIAGE ANNOUNCES
ENDORSEMENTS IN CRITICAL US SENATE CONTESTS

Marriage Group to oppose reelection of
Heitkamp, Donnelly, McCaskill and Tester

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 17, 2018

Washington, DC—The National Organization for Marriage (NOM), the nation’s largest group dedicated to preserving marriage as the union of one man and one woman and protecting the religious liberty rights of marriage supporters, today announced that they were opposing the reelection of Democratic US Senate incumbents Heidi Heitkamp (ND), Joe Donnelly (IN), Claire McCaskill (MO) and Jon Tester (MT). NOM, which has over 300,000 members, has endorsed the Republican challenger in each of these races.

“Our litmus test for incumbents in the US Senate was their vote on the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh,” said Brian Brown, NOM’s president. “There is nothing more important for the restoration of marriage and the protection of religious liberty than the composition of the US Supreme Court. That’s why we worked with our members to generate tens of thousands of contacts with these US Senators, urging them to confirm Justice Kavanaugh. Despite this demonstration of grassroots support, each of these four Democrats opposed the Kavanaugh confirmation. We will work to ensure that they pay for that decision with their careers.”

Brown noted: “In three of the states where NOM has issued an endorsement, voters went to the polls and overwhelmingly voted to define marriage in their state constitutions as only the union of one man and one woman. North Dakota voted 73% in favor of traditional marriage; Missouri voters supported traditional marriage with 71% of the vote; and 67% of Montana voters did likewise. Voters in Indiana were denied their right to vote on marriage.”

“Despite the overwhelming adoption of traditional marriage by voters in nearly three dozen states in elections where over 50 million voters cast ballots, the US Supreme Court in 2015 illegitimately imposed gay ‘marriage’ on the nation,” Brown said. “These four Democrats stood with liberal party leaders like Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi and against the expressed wishes of voters in their states. In each of these states, Donald Trump won election in large part because of his pledge to appoint Supreme Court justices like Brett Kavanaugh. None of these four Democrats can credibly claim to be moderates when they act to deny the confirmation of one of the most superbly qualified Supreme Court nominees in history, Brett Kavanaugh, who was nominated by a president who had carried their state overwhelmingly. They must be defeated.”

Brown said NOM will urge its members to support Rep. Kevin Cramer in North Dakota, state Attorney General Josh Hawley in Missouri, state Auditor Matt Rosendale in Montana, and state Rep. Mike Braun in Indiana.
