Banned for Thanking Kids Who Stood for Pledge of Allegiance

On Thanksgiving, we are reminded that it is good to be thankful. But if you are a teacher, don’t be thankful of kids who stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. That could get you banned from a school:

Jim Furkin says he’s been a substitute teacher for the St. Louis County, Missouri, school district for about 10 years.

Of 24 students, 22 opted to stand for the pledge in the class he was teaching.

“So I say, ‘Thank you very much, all of you that participated. I appreciate that, and I’m sure all of those families that lost loved ones so we could have the freedoms we have today would appreciate that, too.’” Furkin said. …

School officials said his actions were a form of bullying to at least one student who didn’t stand.

Furkin is no longer allowed to teach at Parkway South, where he has filled in for the past 5 years. The superintendent says there is another unspecified reason for the ban, though the “bullying” incident seems to be the major infraction. Maybe they caught him looking respectfully at a flag. He can still teach at other schools in the district for now.
