Government Shutdown Tactic Exploits Welfare Dependence

Prolonging a government shutdown rather than allowing so much as a penny to go toward the desperately needed wall is not just a matter of displacing the population with the Third Worlders who have been flooding across the border. It is also a matter of rallying the base.

Who gets hurt in a government shutdown? Those who depend on the government. That doesn’t only mean predominantly Democrat-voting federal bureaucrats. It also means even more predominantly Democrat-voting welfare recipients:

If the government is not reopened before February, millions of Americans who receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — the nation’s food stamp program — could have their assistance disrupted.

It isn’t just SNAP. Other handouts are threatened:

The Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) are not receiving federal funds at all during the shutdown, but “can continue to operate at the State and local level with any funding and commodity resources that remain available,” according to the USDA. …

Child Nutrition Programs, including School Lunch, School Breakfast, Child and Adult Care Feeding, Summer Food Service and Special Milk will continue operations through February, according to the USDA.

However,

Staffing for Food and Nutrition Services, which oversees the Child Nutrition Programs, SNAP, and WIC, has been cut by 95 percent since the shutdown began.

All they have to do is blame the Schumer Shutdown on Trump. With the media’s assistance, this is child’s play.

Consider the mileage the media got out of two sick children who died on US soil after their illegal alien parents dragged them across the border. If the shutdown continues, expect a profusion of pouting children alleged to be starving to dominate the evening news.

What good is the welfare state if cannot be leveraged for political advantage?
