Profiles in Countermoonbattery: Milton Friedman

Today is the birthday of countermoonbat economist Milton Friedman. He would be 107 years old. Moonbattery.com sponsor Ammo.com offers a tribute:

Milton Friedman is the Godfather of American conservative libertarianism. He was, at a time when it was deeply unfashionable in official circles, a fierce critic of Keynesian economics. He was a leader of the second generation of libertarian economists to come out of the University of Chicago. …

Capitalism and Freedom is the book that eventually brought him popular acclaim. … In the book, he argues for a classically liberal society where free markets solve problems of efficiency, using the United States as an example. He argues for free markets on the basis of both pragmatism and philosophy. He concludes the book with an argument that most of America’s successes are due to the free market and private enterprise, while most of its greatest failures are due to government intervention.

These great failures include the Great Depression, which Friedman attributed to the Federal Reserve.

Friedman’s eloquently expressed opposition to ham-handed Big Government intrusion was an inspiration to the conservative movement that brought us Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. Although he supported a negative income tax, in general he was a valuable friend to economic liberty and opponent of government overreach.
