In 1989 NY Times Admitted: No Warming in Past Century

In 1984, the protagonist Winston Smith has the job of retroactively editing past publications to bring them into line with the current narrative. That way, people can go back into the archives and see that sure enough, Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia. Smith’s talents are urgently required at the NY Times, where you can find information that may conform to reality but not to current official dogma. From January 26, 1989:

After examining climate data extending back nearly 100 years, a team of Government scientists has concluded that there has been no significant change in average temperatures or rainfall in the United States over that entire period.

While the nation’s weather in individual years or even for periods of years has been hotter or cooler and drier or wetter than in other periods, the new study shows that over the last century there has been no trend in one direction or another.

The piece goes at length to make clear that this does not discredit global warming theory. Actually, it sinks global warming theory to the bottom of the sea.

This is the best explanation of the data shark-jumping hoax profiteer James Hansen (who not long previously had endorsed global cooling) could come up with:

Hanson said that global warming caused by the greenhouse effect might have been countered by some cooling phenomenon that has not yet been identified and that the readings in his study recorded the net effect.

Hanson also floated even lamer possible excuses, including that temperatures in the USA from 1895 to 1987 constitute a “statistical fluke” and that industrial activity, while causing global warming, masks it by also causing global cooling.

Despite calling in Spinmaster Hanson for damage control, the article makes a mockery not only of Michael Mann’s phony hockey stick, but of the very premise that anthropogenic global warming theory is based on — namely, that rising CO2 levels drive higher temperatures. I would say it also makes a mockery of the current spectacle featuring Greta the Teenage Climate Warrior, kids let out of school to protest the weather, righteous eco-mobs leaving mountains of trash, et cetera , but that whole theatrical production was already an evident self-mockery.

It is doubtful that the still more politicized NY Times would publish this article now. Winston Smith to the Memory Hole stat.
