In Memory of Those Who Died on September 11, 2001

Eighteen years ago today, also a Tuesday, the world changed forever. Terrorists hijacked four airplanes and used three of them as weapons to kill nearly three thousand people. The crew and passengers of the fourth fought back and ended up sacrificing themselves for who knows how many others.

Those on Flight 93 were not the only people to sacrifice themselves to save others on that day. 412 were emergency workers in New York City who responded to the World Trade Center. 

This included:

343 firefighters (including a chaplain and two paramedics) of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY);
37 police officers of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department (PAPD);
23 police officers of the New York City Police Department (NYPD); and
8 emergency medical technicians and paramedics from private emergency medical services;
1 Patrolman from the New York Fire Patrol.

They ran to the danger instead of away from the danger.

For those of us who were alive that day, we’ll never forget where we were or who we were with or the thoughts we had as we watched it unfold or listened to reports on the radio.
