History of Veterans Day

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Today isn’t just any Monday. Moonbattery.com sponsor Ammo.com gives some background on Veterans Day.

It started off as Armistice Day, celebrating the armistice that stopped the live fighting in World War I at 11 am on November 11, 1918. On 11/11/1921, an unidentified American soldier was buried in what became the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington.

In 1926, a Congressional resolution was passed, making Armistice Day a recurring federal holiday, stating that it should be “commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations.”

Good will and mutual understanding did not prevail. Following the War to End All Wars came WWII and Korea.

By the end of the summer of 1953, after the Korean War ended, about one in every two service-age men were veterans and it was decided that Armistice Day would be officially be changed to Veterans Day – honoring all veterans from all wars.

They tried changing the date a couple of times, but now the holiday is firmly established on November 11.

Different areas celebrate Veterans Day in different ways. Most public schools close (normally on the Monday closest to the holiday), as do all federal buildings, most banks, and many businesses. There are parades and celebrations to honor veterans. Perhaps the most iconic is the annual wreath laying ceremony that happens at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

If you have a flag, make sure it is flying. Thank any vets you encounter. Observe a moment of silence at 11 am. All but the most obdurate moonbats should appreciate America’s veterans.

Read the rest at Ammo.com, and as always, stock up on discount ammunition while you are there.
