1973: AL approved the DH
On this day in 1973 or 2 months before players reported to spring training, the American League adopted the “Designated Hitter” effective for the upcoming season.
Since then, the American and National leagues have played with different rules. In other words, the pitchers hit in the National but a hitter is designated to hit for the pitcher in the American.
It’s insane because it changes the way that the game is played. Could you imagine the AFC and NFC playing with different offensive rules?
It’s time to settle the issue and go one way or another.
The DH is an integral part of winning the AL title, such as happened with Vlad Guerrero and Texas in 2010. It hurts the AL team when they have to adjust their lineup in NL parks in the World Series.
So let’s play by the same rules!
By the way, Ron Bloomberg of the Yankees was the first DH in AL history. He came to bat in a game at the old Yankee Stadium.
