OUTLOOK
An upper-level low-pressure system just northwest of the region early this morning will move away to the northeast today. A strong disturbance rounding the south side of this system will cross the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia late today. A strengthening high-pressure ridge will then build over the southeast through the weekend, with warming temperatures but also afternoon and evening thunderstorms redeveloping each day. The high-pressure ridge will dominate the southeast through much of next week.

Widespread dense fog early. A slight chance of showers early. Showers and thunderstorms likely. Visibility one-quarter mile or less at times early. Highs ranging from the 60s to the lower 70s. Winds out of the southwest 5 to 10 mph. Gusts up to 25 mph this afternoon. Chance of rain 70 percent. Rainfall amounts from a quarter of an inch to half an inch.

Mostly cloudy. Showers likely with a chance of thunderstorms in the evening, then a chance of showers after midnight. Patchy fog after midnight. Lows in the 50s. Winds out of the southwest 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 60 percent.

Patchy fog in the morning. Partly sunny with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the 70s. Winds out of the west 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent.

Hazards
Thunderstorms will develop from the west this afternoon and evening. Cloud to ground lightning and locally heavy rainfall can be expected with any of these thunderstorms. The thunderstorms may also produce very gusty winds, and damaging gusts to 60 mph will be possible in a few storms. An isolated tornado will be possible as well, especially for locations near, or southeast of, the Interstate 85 corridor.

Here are some numbers from the CDC, the NCDHHS, and the Johns Hopkins Dashboard. Macon Media prefers the Johns Hopkins Dashboard because the counts include those non-residents that are left out of the CDC and NCDHHS numbers.
The CDC website [LINK] reports 20,122 people in North Carolina are infected, 702 have died, and infections are widespread, the NCDHHS website [LINK] reports 20,850 confirmed cases from 290,645 targeted tests, and 578 hospitalized and 716 deaths in the state. The Johns Hopkins Dashboard [LINK] reports 20,512 people infected and 728 deaths (these include non-residents located in NC).
