Berkeley Bans Unapproved Food in Checkout Lanes

Berkeley continues to blaze a path into the most picayune reaches of authoritarian moonbattery. The rest of the country will follow once Democrats have to political leverage to force us to. At least it is all for our own good. Berkeley has achieved the distinction of being the first city in the country to ban the sale of unapproved snack food in grocery store checkout lanes:

In its place, stores will be required to “sell more nutritious food and beverage options in their checkout areas.”

Let them eat alfalfa sprouts, or whatever it is trendy for liberal bureaucrats to believe is good for them.

Beginning in March 2021, cookies, candy, chips and cans of soda will no longer be displayed near cash registers.

It’s still a free country. Grocers will be allowed to stock sugar-free gum and milk near the checkout lane — until the City Council realizes that milk is racist.

The decree also affects drug stores like CVS and Walgreens.

Once again, the ChiCom virus is exploited as a pretext for government encroachment:

[Vice-Mayor Sophie] Hahn says the policy is necessary because the pandemic has proved that people with underlying conditions like diabetes are more susceptible to COVID-19.

Total safety is just a few million more regulations away.
