Instagram Suspends Charlie Hebdo Journalists Who Published Cartoons

Facebook owns Instagram.

Having been one of the early targets of social media censorship on Facebook, YouTube et al, I have for quite some time advocated for anti-trust action against these bullying behemoths. The story below once again shows why this is so urgently needed.

Read my article about this at The American Thinker. We are seeing an unprecedented erosion in our First Amendment rights, increasingly prohibiting the flow of ideas and free expression in the public square (social media). Run by left-wing self-possessed snowflakes, social media giants are indulging their worst autocratic impulses. And because they can, it is getting worse. “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Facebook defends Muslim sharia law censorship, champions blasphemy laws.

“Since 2008, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) has granted $330,524 to two Islamist organizations, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Islamic Relief…. SVCF is America’s largest community foundation, with assets of over $8 billion. Its corporate partners include some of the country’s biggest tech companies — its largest donation was $1.5 billion from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.” (more here…)

Silicon Valley, in other words, appears to be in the habit of financially supporting terror tied groups.

Instagram briefly suspends accounts of ‘Charlie Hebdo’ journalists who published Muhammad cartoons

The cartoons appeared on the front page of the newspaper issue dedicated to the opening of the trial of the January 2015 attacks.

The Instagram accounts of two Charlie Hebdo journalists were suspended for several hours, shortly after they shared a photo from the front page of the newspaper dedicated to the opening of the trial of the January 2015 attacks, featuring several caricatures of the prophet Mohammed.

Journalist Laure Daussy is the first to report this blockage, in a message posted on Twitter on Saturday evening, September 5, with a screenshot in support: “ My Instagram account has been” deactivated “. The last photo I posted was the front page of Charlie Hebdo. So it’s probably hacking or mass reporting, a new form of censorship. Mind-blowing . ”

Sunday morning, designer Corinne Rey, known as Coco, in turn let it be known on Twitter that her Instagram account had suffered the same fate: “ Like my colleague from Charlie Hebdo, Laure Daussy, my Instagram account was deactivated following the broadcast. of the cover “All that for that” with the cartoons of Muhammad. Simply scandalous.

Consulted Sunday at 11 a.m., the accounts of these Charlie Hebdo journalists were still unavailable on Instagram, owned by Facebook. Consulted again at 1 p.m., these accounts were nevertheless again available. Laure Daussy indicates on Twitter that this suspension was ” automatic, following a campaign of reports of those who wanted to censor the front page “.

The accounts were deleted by mistake and we reinstated them as soon as it was brought to our attention, ” said the communication service of Instagram, in an exchange with Le Figaro. “ We are sorry for the confusion and distress this may have caused. FYI, this had nothing to do with Charlie’s cover, it was not otherwise censored and was posted on Charlie’s account.

Asked about this on Le Grand Jury RTL-LCI-Le Figaro , the Minister of Culture Roselyne Bachelot recalled ” strongly the right to caricature as Emmanuel Macron did “.

The issue in question was sold out on day one and was reprinted, the satirical newspaper told AFP on Friday. It had been printed in 200,000 copies (three times the usual volume). For the cartoonist Juin, who joined the editorial staff after the attack of January 7, 2015, “ it shows that we are supported, that freedom of expression, secularism, the right to blasphemy are not obsolete values and that ‘they are supported by the French who have chosen to buy this number ”.
