FreedomWorks’ Member of the Month for April 2021: Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.)

FreedomWorks is proud to announce that our member of the month for April 2021 is Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.). A new member now representing Florida’s 19th Congressional District in the southwest part of the state, Rep. Donalds came to Washington as a FreedomWorks For America-endorsed candidate after years of public service representing his fellow Floridians in the Florida House of Representatives.

The Big Picture

The freshman class of Republicans in Washington have brought to the table new ideas and a rejuvenated sense of purpose in advocating for traditionally conservative causes: educational freedom, fiscal responsibility, and responsible governance.

Serving on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, House Budget Committee, and House Small Business Committee, Rep. Donalds is uniquely positioned to take action on all of these issues, and take action he has.

Further, his work in the Florida House of Representatives leading on criminal justice reform lends itself to continuing the goodwill bipartisanship on a critical limited government issue, in the face of fierce partisanship that permeates so many areas of policy in this current political climate.

The Details

In his first few months in Congress, Rep. Donalds already has:

• Joined FreedomWorks for a National School Choice Week webinar on educational freedom during his first few weeks in office
• Introduced a bill to counter Democratic efforts to exempt their hyper-partisan $1.9T blue state bailout “COVID relief” bill from PAYGO budget restraints
• Cosponsored legislation critical to limited government:

1. REINS Act to establish congressional review of executive agency regulations
2. SCHOOL Act to require federal education dollars to follow students instead of systems
3. Cost Estimates Improvement Act to require consideration of interest on the national debt when estimating the cost of a new piece of legislation
4. H.J.Res. 12 to impose term limits on Congress
5. H.J.Res. 11 to set the number of Supreme Court justices at nine

In just the past few weeks, Rep. Donalds has:

• Called out President Biden for his hypocritical “leadership” on COVID-19
• Railed against the partisan effort for D.C. statehood
• Visited the southern border more times than Vice President Harris

Why It Matters

For far too long, Republicans have been given a free pass to ignore their purported principles when politically expedient. Members like Rep. Donalds prove that this does not have to be and should not be the case.

Especially coming from a state like Florida, which has been a leader in the COVID-19 pandemic of protecting — not violating — the rights guaranteed under our Constitution, Rep. Donalds’ direct advocacy for liberty is all the more meaningful.
