André Menras and his friend Jean-Pierre Debris climbed the Marine Corps statue in front of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Vietnam (now the Opera House) in Saigon to hang the Liberation flag, and spread the petition demanding that the U.S. and its allies withdraw their troops from Vietnam. For this act, André Menras and Jean-Pierre Debris were sentenced to three years in prison, four years. André was released and expelled from Vietnam on 1 January 1973, 27 days before the Paris agreement was signed.
