Juan leaves out some details that could bring clarity. As he paints it, two armies were lined up on opposing hills with a valley in the middle. The Phillistines showed up with an overwhelming army….
The battle was shaping up to be Oklahoma Power U vs the chipmunks of Acorn U. The giants were unnecessary, the giants were mockery and overkill. The plan was massacre followed by another porno party on the holy of holies.
David during this time was even less respected by his own tribe than he was by the Philistines. This was the guy singing to goats out in the pasture. Even if he had a great war plan nobody was going to listen to him, so he took initiative on his own.

Keep in mind that there’s an audience on both hills. Both armies are at such a distance that all they can do is watch in amazement.
David earns assistance after taking down Goliath and he proceeds to go around and kill the other four giants in similar fashion… hence the need for five stones. The psychological damage on the Philistines was devastating, not only did they lose their leader Goliath but all the other giants as well. What looked like an easy romp changed suddenly. Now the Phillistines had a sickening…

The giants we have today are media contagions… widely held beliefs with little or no substance in reality backing them.
