Pre filed bills for 2022 – which ones interest you?

Over the past two weeks, the following bills have been pre-filed for the 2022 session (which begins in January and runs through most likely May).

As I shared at the Chapin Chamber breakfast this morning, I no longer simply put my names on bill (known as cospnosoring) just to ‘check a box’. I have learned that language matters and that sometimes, while the bill reads and sounds great, it doesn’t (or can’t do) what the reader (or member) proposes.

Sometimes bills are “inartfully drawn” (as are amendments that fly on the house floor during debates) and what is intended is not what is actually written.

I’m currently looking into a few of these and if I believe they can do what is written or intended, I can co-sponsor them and talk with other colleagues and work to get the bill passed to the Senate. Keep in mind, these bills – and the hundreds already on file from earlier in 2021, have to pass both bodies in the same language before being sent to the Governor’s desk. They must do this before we adjourn in May/June or else the bill(s) are “dead” and new ones will have to be drafted for the 2023-2024 session.
