OUTLOOK
A strong winter storm with dive into the mid-south this weekend with significant impacts expected across the region before departing along the the East Coast. Cool and breezy conditions are expected in the storms wake Monday with lingering snow showers near the Tennessee border. Temperatures will rebound to near normal mid-week ahead of our next cold front.
Short Range Ensemble Forecasting Computer Models
A lot of amateur forecasters often share snow cover maps they see posted online. Most of the time, they only share the maps that show the most snow and neglect to let their friends or readers know that these maps are just the ones that show the most snow instead of trying to communicate uncertainties in the forecast. Macon Media considers any forecast map for an event more than 72 hours away to be unreliable and will not share any because of this unless it is a map prepared by professionals at the National Weather Service, Lokel Yokel Weather or a few other trusted meterologists. Perhaps a better tool are charts called meteograms that allow forecast uncertainty to be communicated to the public so they can manage expectations of an event. The above chart is the output of a Short Range Ensemble Forecast of comouter models by the National Weather Service for their weather station located at the Macon County Airport. The map is annotated to help you understand the information being displayed. You can click on the map to embiggen it to a larger size or download it to your device to expand it even more.
In the interest of promting transparency and to communicate uncertainties in the forecast, Macon Media will try to share some of these products in the future. While it’s a bit technical and not as sexy or popular for generating social media buzz or “becoming viral” as posting a clown map, it is more responsible and sober. –Bobby
Now, having blasted snow maps, here is what the National Weather Service has posted as what they think the most likely scenario, followed by a low end amount and a high end amount map for the region. This more effectivly communicates the uncertainties in the forecast than just a single map. A low pressure system will cross the mountains from the northwest tonight. Light snow accumulations are expected with the passage of this system, especially at elevations above 3500 feet and near the Tennessee border.
Saturday through Wednesday
Winter Storm Watch.
Confidence is increasing that a major winter storm will arrive from the west over the weekend, with the greatest impacts Saturday night through Sunday night. Significant accumulations of snow are possible, with sleet and freezing rain possibly mixing in at times, especially over southern mountain locations. The accumulating snowfall should end as a period of northwest flow snow showers Sunday night into Monday morning. All interests should closely monitor this system as the impacts could be substantial, however specific impacts remain uncertain at this time. Very cold weather following the storm could keep road conditions treacherous into early next week.

…WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY EVENING THROUGH MONDAY MORNING…
* WHAT…Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches across the mountain valleys and extreme northeast Georgia, 8 to 12 inches along and near the Blue Ridge Escarpment, and upwards of 12 to 20 inches at elevations above 4000 feet, and ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch possible.
* WHERE…Portions of upstate South Carolina, northeast Georgia and western North Carolina.
* WHEN…From Saturday evening through Monday morning.
* IMPACTS…Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Precipitation may begin as early as Saturday afternoon across parts of the mountains, and will increase in coverage and intensity late Saturday night with a changeover to all snow in most places. Most of the precipitation will fall as snow across the mountains and foothills of North Carolina, northeast Georgia, and Upstate South Carolina. The precipitation will taper off Sunday afternoon and evening, but snow will linger along the Tennessee border into Monday morning. Widespread black ice should be expected Monday morning, and may be a concern into the middle of the week. Later guidance may change snow amounts and will determine when a Warning is issued.
