Is Matter All That Matters?
Matter is not and cannot be all that matters. On today’s podcast, Gary points out the problems for matter-only proponents.
A classic moment in presuppositional apologetics happened in “The Great Debate” between Dr. Gordon Stein and Dr. Greg Bahnsen in 1985. During cross-examinations, Dr. Bahnsen began the following exchange:
Bahnsen: Do you believe there are laws of logic then?
Stein: Absolutely.
Bahnsen: Are they universal?
Stein: They are agreed upon by human beings not realizing it is just out in nature.
Bahnsen: Are they simply conventions then?
Stein: They are conventions that are self-verifying.
Bahnsen: Are they sociological laws or laws of thought?
Stein: They are laws of thought which are interpreted by man.
Bahnsen: Are they material in nature?
Stein: How could a law be material?
Bahnsen: That’s the question I’m going to ask you.
Stein: I would say no.
Stein then examines Bahnsen picking up right where they left off:
Stein: Dr. Bahnsen, would you call God material or immaterial?
Bahnsen: Immaterial.
Stein: What is something that’s immaterial?
Bahnsen: Something not extended in space.
Stein: Can you give me any other example, other than God, that’s immaterial?
Bahnsen: The laws of logic.
The starting point is the God of the Bible. The Bible begins with this foundational presupposition: ‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth’ (Gen. 1:1). Against All Opposition lays out the definitive apologetic model to help believers understand the biblical method of defending the Christian faith.
A materialistic worldview has limits. Matter isn’t and can’t be all that matters. Evolutionists and materialists will rarely admit to this intellectual, ethical, and moral failing in their assumptions, so in this talk, Gary points out the problems for them.
