Here is the news and weather briefing for Macon County.


GENERAL OUTLOOK

Dry high pressure will remain over the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia through today. A cold front will approach from the west on Thursday and cross the region bringing some rain Thursday night through Friday morning. Dry weather returns for the weekend as another front settles south into the region. Well above normal temperatures are expected early next week.

Franklin Area

Today

Sunny, with highs near 60. Calm winds in the morning increasing to come out of the south 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight

Mostly clear, with lows in the mid 30s. Winds out of the south 5 to 10 mph becoming calm before midnight.

Thursday

A 20 percent chance of showers after 4pm. Increasing clouds, with highs in the lower 60s. Winds out of the southeast early in the morning increasing to come out of the south southwest 15 to 20 mph by midmorning. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

Thursday Night

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Lows in the mid 40s. Winds out of the southwest 10 to 14 mph shifting to come out of the west after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of rain is 90%.

Friday

A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 7am. Partly sunny, with highs in the upper 50s. Windy.

Friday Night

Partly cloudy, with lows around 30. Windy.



Highlands Plateau

Today

Sunny, with highs near 50. Light and variable winds early in the morning increasing to come out of the southwest 5 to 10 mph by midmorning.

Tonight

Mostly clear, with lows in the mid 30s. Winds out of the southwest 5 to 10 mph.

Thursday

Increasing clouds, with highs in the low-to-mid 50s. Winds out of the southwest 10 to 15 mph in the morning increasing to 15 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph.

Thursday Night

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Lows in the low to mid 40s. Winds out of the southwest 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of rain is 90%.

Friday

A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 7am. Mostly sunny, with highs near 50. Windy.

Friday Night

Mostly clear, with lows around 30. Windy.



Otto and South Central Macon County

Today

Sunny, with highs in the upper 50s. Calm winds early in the morning increasing to come out of the south 5 to 10 mph by midmorning.

Tonight

Mostly clear, with lows in the mid 30s. Winds out of the southeast 5 to 10 mph.

Thursday

A 20 percent chance of showers after 3pm. Increasing clouds, with highs near 60. Winds out of the southwest 5 to 10 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

Thursday Night

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Lows in the mid 40s. Winds out of the southwest 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of rain is 90%.

Friday

A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 7am. Mostly sunny, with highs in the mid-to-upper 50s. Windy.

Friday Night

Mostly clear, with lows around freezing.



Nantahala Area

It will be dry again today. Winds will increase tom orrow afternoon ahead of rain.

Dry air in place across the region will permit afternoon relative humidity values to fall to between 30 and 35 percent for several hours across the region. Although winds will be fairly light from the southwest, drying fuels and brush will combine with the dry air to increase fire danger this afternoon.

Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn today. If you do burn, use caution since fires can quickly get out of hand under these conditions.
