Here is the news and weather briefing for Macon County.


GENERAL OUTLOOK

A strong cold front will approach from the Mississippi Valley tonight then move across our area this afternoon and evening. Expect showers and thunderstorms ahead of the front. A brief period of dry weather is expected Thursday before unsettled conditions return Friday and into the weekend. Temperatures will be a bit chilly on Friday.

Franklin Area

Today

Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 4pm, then showers likely, mainly in the mid-to-late afternoon. Highs in the mid 60s. Winds out of the south 15 to 25 mph in the morning shifting to come out of the northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph. Chance of rain is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight

A chance of showers before 7pm, then a slight chance of rain Before midnight. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with lows in the mid 20s. Winds out of the northwest 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 5 to 15 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of rain is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Thursday

Partly sunny, with Highs near 60. Calm winds in the morning increasing to come out of the southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Thursday Night

Mostly cloudy, with lows around freezing. Winds out of the southeast 5 to 10 mph.

Friday

Showers likely, mainly after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with Highs near 50. Chance of rain is 70%.

Friday Night

Showers, mainly before 4am. Lows around 40. Chance of rain is 80%.



Highlands Plateau

Today

Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 4pm, then showers likely, mainly in the mid-to-late afternoon. Patchy fog between 8am and 2pm. Highs in the upper 50s. Winds out of the southwest 10 to 20 mph in the morning shifting to come out of the northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high in the upper 30s mph. Chance of rain is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight

A chance of rain and snow showers before 7pm, then a slight chance of rain and snow Before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with lows in the mid 20s. Winds out of the northwest 15 to 25 mph decreasing to 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph. Chance of rain is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Thursday

Partly sunny, with Highs in the upper 40s. Winds out of the north 5 to 10 mph becoming south southeast in the afternoon.

* WHAT…Northwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected above 3500 feet.

* WHERE…Haywood, Macon, Northern Jackson, Southern Jackson, and Transylvania Counties.

* WHEN…From 1 PM Wednesday to 1 AM EST Thursday.

* IMPACTS…Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.
