Well above normal temperatures continue today ahead of an approaching cold front. Showers and a few thunderstorms associated with the front will cross the region tonight through early Wednesday. Breezy conditions and northwest flow snow showers near the Tennessee border will be possible as much cooler air returns for the latter half of the week.

Nantahala Area

Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected across the Tennessee Valley this afternoon. This band of storms will track east into the North Carolina mountains late this evening and move across the foothills/Piedmont overnight into early Wednesday morning. A few severe thunderstorms will be possible across the area with the primary hazard being locally damaging winds. An isolated tornado and very isolated hail cannot be ruled out either.
