His terror connections have already come up in this campaign. He assisted the World Trade center bombing’s “Blind Sheikh,” Omar Abdel-Rahman, both before and after the bombing, for which Abdel-Rahman was tried and convicted for terrorism and seditious conspiracy. Even Politico noted three weeks ago that Hamawy “had a real years long association” with Abdel-Rahman, as established at trial. Hamawy shrugged it off as “guilt-by-association attacks on Muslim and Arab candidates.” It turns out that Hamawy has some other associations that are just as problematic.

His relationship with the “Blind Sheikh” received significant coverage in recent weeks. A 1995 court transcript shows how the then-medical student Hamawy described meeting the Islamist leader in 1991, visiting him at his home and accompanying him on a 13-hour van trip to a conference in Detroit. In the courtroom, he and the sheikh greeted each other warmly, and Hamawy denied a government informant’s claim that Abdel-Rahman had urged the assassination of the then-president of Egypt.

It was almost certainly a first in American history, or at very least, one of a handful of incidents in which a congressional candidate’s supporters celebrated his victory with screams of “Allahu akbar.” Thousands of people have been elected to Congress since 1789, and not once was there the slightest chance that the jihadi war cry would ever be shouted over any of these elections until Keith Ellison, Andre Carson, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib triumphed over their rivals. And now that Adam Hamawy has won the Democrat primary for a congressional seat from New Jersey’s 12th District and will almost certainly be headed to Washington in January, the cry is going to get more and more common.
