Turkey Arrest Journalists on Eve of NATO Meetings

Financial Times: Turkish officials on Sunday detained two journalists and dozens of opposition campaigners ahead of a Nato summit in Ankara, in a continuing crackdown that has included the arrest of a stand-up comic whose satirical barbs have captured Turkey’s popular imagination. Deniz Göktaş, a 32-year-old comedian who called President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan a “dictator” in his latest set, was arrested on Friday on charges of “inciting hatred and hostility” and insulting the president. Göktaş’s 90-minute routine has garnered 11mn views after 10 days on YouTube. The latest detentions form part of an ongoing security sweep by Turkish authorities ahead of the July 7-8 Nato summit. Leaders of the 32-member military alliance including US President Donald Trump are expected to attend (Financial Times).
