The modern version is much darker. Instead of getting pushed into the oven by Gretel, the witch prevails, baking her child to death and then getting a light sentence.
Fox News reports on Mariah Thomas, who killed her 1-month-old daughter Za’Riah Mae:
Thomas, 28, pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death and was ordered to serve 13 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections, according to Jackson County court records.
Make that 11 years, subtracting time served.
The judge also ordered her to pay $68 to Missouri’s Crime Victims’ Compensation Fund and waived all other court costs.
Thomas said it was an accident; she mistook the oven for a crib. Next time, she will know to blame the postpartum blues and escape prison altogether.
