Saudi Arabia Reaches Out to Israel for Intelligence Help on Houthi Threat; ‘The Timing is Almost Ironic”

If only the Saudis had had the sagacity and boldness to join the Abraham Accords. Their bigotry will be their undoing.

Complementary to the recent meeting between top military commanders from the U.S., Israel and several Arab countries in Germany last week to discuss the war with Iran and broader tensions in the region — Saudi Arabia,  most immediately threatened by the latest aggression from the Houthis, seem to be making a concerted effort to reach out to Israel.

Israel and Saudi Arabia held talks mediated by US Central Command aimed at helping Riyadh defend itself against the Houthi military through intelligence assistance, a regional diplomat confirmed to The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday. his follows earlier reporting by the Post’s sister outlet, Walla, which cited diplomatic sources in the Middle East. “There were good discussions,” a source familiar with the discussions told the Post.

Reporting from Israel Hayom: Israel Hayom revealed this week that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had approached countries across the Middle East, and indirectly Israel as well, seeking assistance in the war against the Houthis, in which he appears to be suffering significant setbacks…. Israel was approached indirectly through US Central Command, or CENTCOM, with a request for intelligence and other assistance aimed at preventing the Houthis from blocking the Bab al-Mandab Strait. CENTCOM operates the joint regional command center that coordinates defensive and offensive operations in the region (Israel Hayom).

The timing is almost ironic. A month ago, Saudi Arabia signed a defense alliance with Pakistan and Turkey, so it was only natural — and by the way, they were talking about the Arab world, including Iran — that they turned to the Pakistanis and to Erdogan and asked for help. That, of course, isn’t happening. Apparently, under the regulations, or the terms of the agreement, the Pakistanis and Turks didn’t press the issue and didn’t sign off on the approval. It’s not happening.So to their chagrin, the Saudis are calling Jerusalem and asking for help (Amit Segal).

Military Leaders From US, Israel, Arab Nations Meet in Germany to Discuss Conflict With Iran

Could the latest threat from Iran—via the Houthis—draw Israel and Saudi Arabia together?

Barak Ravid at Axios: Top military commanders from the U.S., Israel and several Arab countries met last week in Germany to discuss the war with Iran and broader tensions in the region, two Israeli officials told Axios. The private retreat, organized by Commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Adm. Brad Cooper, was not officially announced by any of the participating countries. While similar meetings have taken place in the past, this was the first such gathering since the U.S. and Israel went to war with Iran more than six months ago. It was a rare opportunity for military commanders from Israel and Arab Gulf countries that don’t have diplomatic relations with Israel to meet and exchange views on the war. In addition to Cooper, the meeting was attended by the military chiefs of staff of Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Egypt (Axios).
