Shontel Lewis Presents Her Qualification to Be Mayor of Denver

The résumés of Democrat pols are often unimpressive. Prominent congressmember Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s previous job was as a bartender. But no one can say Shontel Lewis lacks a qualification to represent Democrats:

Denver socialist and city councilwoman Shontel Lewis said she’s qualified to serve as the city’s mayor because she was convicted of stealing food stamps, a crime she said made her familiar with “navigating all the ills of poverty.”

Exploiting the welfare state to steal from taxpayers is a Democrat specialty. Deep blue strongholds like California and Minnesota have raised it to a fine art.

Lewis, the Denver Democratic Socialists of America’s pick for mayor, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft in 2008 after stealing thousands of dollars in public benefits by using her position with the Colorado Department of Human Services East Food Stamp Office to reissue Electronic Benefit Transfer cards intended for others to her roommate and herself.

Why is stealing thousands of dollars a misdemeanor? Because looters like Lewis are already in charge in Colorado. So she was sentenced to probation — that is, she was not punished.

Colorado’s constitution … bars anyone who has been “convicted of embezzlement of public moneys, bribery, perjury, solicitation of bribery, or subornation of perjury” from holding “any office of trust or profit in this state.”

Yet she has already held two elected positions since pleading guilty.
