Fake Grades and Fake Classes Help Advance Equity
Effective education requires rigorous standards. This entails a violation of equity, which is one reason public schools now serve not so much to educate as to babysit and bestow increasingly meaningless diplomas.

Howard Jones served as assistant principal at Stratford High School and was also the grading principal, responsible for auditing every grade given at the school.
Two principals he worked under had different approaches to grade manipulation:
Principal Michael Steele came up with a contract with students in which they would be graded on effort instead of mastery of the subject.
E for Effort would likely have been an appropriate grade in many cases.
Under Principal Michael Pratt, ingenuity was applied to the use of a credit recovery system called Edgenuity. Students were placed in classes that could not be found on the schedule.
Jones said as he audited, he found students were given failing grades in the alleged fake classes, which qualified them to take Edgenuity, an online content recovery system used to retake a class. Under state law, Edgenuity can only be given to student who has a failed a class. …
[B]efore taking Edgenuity, students can take what’s called a “test for credit,” which if passed, allowed them to test out of the class.
Here’s how students passed the test for a nonexistent class they had failed:
“With teacher assistance,” Jones said. “…Somebody guiding them, saying, ‘Here’s the answer. Well, that’s not the correct answer. Try again.’”
Testing out of the imaginary classes helped students to graduate and the district to raise its graduation rate. Jones reports that one student with a physics credit from Edgenuity on his transcript was “a special needs kid” who could not even read. Now that’s equity.
