Hinglaj Celebrations in Balochistan

Religious tolerance is not established through speeches or constitutional promises alone. Its real strength becomes visible when people can practise their faith openly, visit their sacred places without fear, and receive equal protection from the state. In Pakistan, the recent Hindu celebrations at Hinglaj Mata Temple in Balochistan offer an encouraging example of this principle. Thousands of devotees gathered at one of Hinduism’s most revered religious sites, where government institutions, local communities and volunteers worked together to facilitate their worship. The celebrations demonstrated how practical support for religious minorities can strengthen national unity and promote peaceful coexistence.

Located amid the rugged mountains of Balochistan’s Lasbela district, Hinglaj Mata Temple holds immense spiritual significance for Hindus across South Asia. Its religious importance extends beyond Pakistan’s borders, attracting pilgrims who undertake demanding journeys to reach the shrine. For many devotees, travelling through difficult mountainous terrain is itself an expression of faith. The continued preservation and accessibility of this historic temple also highlight an important dimension of Pakistan’s cultural heritage, where different religious traditions have existed for centuries.

A Remarkable Celebration of Faith

The scale of the April 2026 festival was particularly significant. Nearly 300,000 Hindu pilgrims reportedly attended the three-day gathering, making it one of the region’s largest Hindu religious congregations. The Balochistan government, district administration and Provincial Disaster Management Authority helped provide security, essential supplies and medical assistance. Meanwhile, the Shri Hinglaj Mata Welfare Mandli and hundreds of volunteers arranged free meals, drinking water and refreshments. This cooperation between public institutions and religious communities illustrated how religious freedom becomes meaningful when authorities address the practical needs of worshippers.

The October 2026 Navratri and Durga Ashtami celebrations reinforced this positive development. Hindu devotees travelled from different parts of Pakistan, with many completing portions of their pilgrimage on foot. Special prayers were held at the shrine on October 19, while the provincial government provided security and administrative assistance. Senator Danesh Kumar publicly appreciated Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti and the Balochistan government for their arrangements. Such recognition matters because minority representatives are directly acknowledging the support provided to their communities rather than merely being the subjects of official statements.

Minority Representation Beyond Symbolism

One particularly encouraging development was the appointment of Kashish Chaudhry, Balochistan’s first Hindu woman assistant commissioner, as focal person for the celebrations. Her responsibility included supervising arrangements and coordinating facilities for pilgrims. Her appointment carried significance beyond the festival itself. When members of religious minorities occupy responsible positions in public administration, they demonstrate that citizenship and professional opportunity need not be restricted by religious identity.

Pakistan’s experience at Hinglaj also offers an opportunity to reconsider how religious harmony should be assessed internationally. Minority rights are sometimes discussed primarily through political accusations and competing national narratives. Yet the more meaningful indicators are whether sacred places remain accessible, religious gatherings receive protection, and minority citizens participate in public institutions. Pakistan’s arrangements at Hinglaj deserve recognition on these grounds. At the same time, genuine religious inclusion requires consistent protection for Hindu, Christian, Sikh and other minority communities throughout the country, not merely during prominent festivals.

Religious Freedom and the Regional Contrast

The developments at Hinglaj also invite comparison with concerns surrounding Muslim religious heritage in neighbouring India. The demolition of Babri Masjid in December 1992 remains one of South Asia’s most painful examples of religious polarization. More recently, reports have documented demolitions affecting mosques, madrasas, shrines and other Muslim religious properties. One published compilation identifies 861 affected sites, including 57 mosques, 563 mazars, six dargahs, 226 madrasas, six Eidgahs, one graveyard and two minarets. However, this figure should be treated as a reported compilation rather than a conclusively verified official nationwide total.

These developments raise serious questions about equal treatment, legal safeguards and the preservation of religious heritage. Indian authorities have sometimes justified demolitions through land regulations and anti-encroachment measures, but such actions require transparent procedures, consistent enforcement and adequate protection for religious freedom. The essential question is whether all communities receive equal treatment under the law. The contrast with Hinglaj is therefore instructive. Religious sites should be protected through fair institutions rather than becoming casualties of political disputes or communal tensions.

Turning Religious Harmony into Lasting Policy

For Pakistan, the importance of Hinglaj extends beyond international comparisons. The celebrations demonstrate how provincial administrations can work constructively with minority communities while respecting their religious identities. This experience should encourage further investment in pilgrimage infrastructure, road accessibility, healthcare facilities, sanitation and the preservation of historic religious sites. Regular consultation with Hindu representatives would also help ensure that future arrangements reflect the community’s own priorities.

The most powerful message emerging from Hinglaj is that religious diversity can strengthen rather than divide a nation. Pakistan’s facilitation of Hindu worship deserves appreciation, particularly when accompanied by meaningful minority representation in public service. Yet religious harmony must remain an everyday responsibility, measured through equal citizenship, protection from discrimination and freedom of worship. By building upon the Hinglaj experience, Pakistan can demonstrate that respect for faith is not simply a diplomatic message but a practical commitment to the dignity and rights of every citizen.
