Coal miners visit DC to fight for black lung benefits

Around 150 coal miners with black lung disease or their widows and loved ones from across Appalachia traveled to Washington, D.C., to tell their stories to Congress and demand that legislators shore up the Black Lung Disability Trust Fund.

Blackjewel bankruptcy bad news for workers and mine cleanup

In the past two months, three Central Appalachian coal companies — Cambrian Coal, Revelation Energy and its affiliate, Blackjewel, and Blackhawk Mining — have announced bankruptcy. The Revelation / Blackjewel bankruptcy has been particularly volatile. The companies’ mines in Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia and Wyoming shut down immediately, worker paychecks were retroactively withdrawn from accounts, and the CEO was forced out within days.
