Right now, we have a golden opportunity to bring much-needed investment to Appalachia’s coal communities, which for more than a century provided the fuel to grow our country but are now reeling from environmental and economic hardship. Congress is looking at two bills that will infuse hundreds of millions into the region to cleanup abandoned, often dangerous coal sites and repurpose them into community centers, hiking trails, solar farms, vineyards and a host of other new economic projects.
