Review By James R. Holland

Another Comic Book Character Hits the Movie Screen

This 110-minute, PG-Rated Sci-Fi/Action/Thriller is supposedly set in Paradise, Ohio. However the Ohio settings turn out to have been filmed in Murrysville, Pennsylvania, Islamorada, Florida, Pittsburgh and Vandergrift, Pennsylvania.

The main characters are mostly twenty-something high school seniors. The movie has the same feel as some of the recent Vampire flicks also taking place in high schools. It’s obviously intended to have at least one sequel. The very evil creatures in this film, called Mogadorians look like they previously starred in the recent Bruce Willis movie “The Fifth Element.”

Hunky looking John (Who is #4) is played by Alex Pettyfer a former fashion model for Ralph Lauren. Alien #4’s bodyguard from his home planet is Henry, played effectively by Timothy Olyphant. John falls love with another free-spirited blonde high school student Sarah played believably by Dianna Agron.

Teresa Palmer plays another alien, Number Six. She is an arch-type action figure. She seems born to her lipstick red motorcycle as she blasts across the countryside.

Callan McAuliffe plays Sam who is destined to become a member of the numbers gang. Kevin Durand makes a memorable, evil commander of the Mogadorian troops sent to destroy the nine numbers before the Mogadorians invade Earth and destroy the human race.

There is an excellent supporting cast including Jake Abel, Jeff Hochendoner, Patrick Sebes, Greg Townely Reuben Langdon just to mention a few of them. One of the more memorable character isn’t even human or Mogadorian, he is an elderly Beagle hound with some interesting talents for a pet watchdog.

Director D.J.  Caruso does a good job with this teenage-targeted fantasy flick. Jobie Hughes and James Frey (as Pittacus Lore) did the novel the film is based on.

This movie appears to be headed for a very successful run fueled by its target audience. A couple of the cast members are certain to become major pop celebrities with huge fan bases. It’s good entertainment and even the Mogadorian commander has a warped sense of humor that again may remind the audience of the Gary Oldman character (Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg) in the film “The Fifth Element.”
