Perform Like a Rock Star and Still Have Time for Lunch By Orna W. Drawas (The Book Designers/2010)

This is an excellent self-help book which provides pearls of wisdom on how to manage tasks of varying complexity at work or in your home. A hallmark of the presentation is to deliver results.   In fact, Suze Orman, personal financial expert advises to OVERDELIVER on expectations.

Small but big changes are the order of the day over a purely static modus operandi. Another important challenge is to do the right things since time is limited. Set priorities. Sometimes, the small things can derail an overall deadline or objective.  On the other hand, ignoring important details can precipitate a calamity.

The most important aspect of business planning of any kind is to have a motivating goal which provides the momentum to move the agenda forward. “Just do it.”  This saying ignores the dead weight of analysis paralysis. Another important planning technique is to break down goals into smaller subgoals or snippets so that these can be managed more easily.

Scheduling priorities is critical so that deadlines can be identified and met. The “To Do List” is an important mechanism for forcing the issue on what matters by recording every important task in a ranked  sequential order. Finally, deadlines are a motivating factor for a timely task completion.

Sometimes, the saying “you talk too much” can be distracting. There are times, though, when you don’t talk enough.  An example would be not speaking up when management seeks quality input in order to make a strategic decision.

The book has some very important guidance on how and when to delegate. Some people are lost on this aspect of management.  For instance, delegate when you can’t do the task or the expertise is somewhere else in the organization or there is a team member who would have more patience with the task.   Always reward success as a catalyst for future successes!

Overall, this is a very helpful book with regard to personal management in settings in and out of the office. The acquisition of this book + actually reading it + applying the rules set forth will assist you in planning and executing daily priorities.
