I would believe aliens over gods, and I would believe an advanced human civilization over aliens. There is no reason why not, it’s not as if they were any different than us or had lesser minds. In fact if anything their written languages were better than ours. Based on alegory represented by totems, advanced abstract and very clever. Because the meaning of eg, an eagle never changes, an eagle is always an eagle. A totem describes the nature of an energy, not the actual thing. An eagle flies high, can see everything from all angles, it therefore depicts wisdom, knowledge, being able to rise above a situation, etc. A whole library of meanings in animals because they are a ready made data base, everyone knows the habits of animals. It travels through time pretty much intact.
