Tanzanite Miner Narrowly Escapes Mob Justice for Alleged Witchcraft

A small scale miner at the Mererani in Simanjiro District, Manyara region narrowly escaped death from an angry mob in the township for using his own child in witchcraft ritual in a belief that he will get more tanzanite minerals miraculously.

The Manyara Regional Police Commander, ACP Akili Mpwapwa, said the suspect Antony Bedan (25) a resident of Zaire area in the township has been arrested by the police for allegedly attacking and causing body harm to his three year old child.

Commander Mpwapwa said Bedan had repeatedly caused bodily harm to her daughter Monica Beda (3) attacking her on the head, face, palms and on her back. He explained that the aim was to get her blood which he used to smear on his face in a belief that his tanzanite mine on plot D would yield more minerals miraculously.

Witnesses in the neighbourhood alleged that Bed would sometimes make the baby sleep under the bed in a witchcraft ritual meant to make the believer rich. Source
