I have no idea why everyone is so excited about a picture of a sea lamprey.
It is a normal sized lamprey folks! Maybe slightly larger than normal, but not by
much. Let me explain why it looks so big in the picture. It looks overly large because
it is closer to the camera than the guy’s hand is. In the photography and motion picture
industry, this is called a “forced perspective” shot.. First notice that the creature is very
close to the lens (as close as it can be and still be in focus with the aperature setting on
the camera).. Then notice that the spear is aimed toward the camera and that the
guy is “forcing” the perspective on you.. (Not intentionally trying to deceive anyone I’m sure)
But the creature is right close to the lens (much closer than the hand).. and
the hand is back probably at least a foot or more further back with the spear coming
toward you at a good angle.. You can easily produce your own “forced perspective”
shot by trying it out for yourself! Put some small thing on a stick and repeat his
angle by putting the end of the stick (with your object on it) closer to the lens,
and you will see that it will make the object appear over twice the size when you
view it. So do realized that you are looking at a normal sized lamprey with a
forced perspective shot! Are you still amazed? Or are you now all upset because
it isn’t some huge new monster from the sea? As always .. You decide.
