USA delays ‘Shooter’ premiere due to Dallas shooting

(CNN) USA Network is delaying the premiere of an upcoming drama about a decorated Marine sniper in the wake of last week’s deadly shooting in Dallas.

“Shooter,” based on the 2007 film starring Mark Wahlberg, had been set to debut July 19. It will now premiere a week later. “In light of recent tragic events and out of respect for the victims, their families and our viewers, we have decided to postpone the premiere date for the upcoming USA Network series Shooter, to July 26,” the network said in a statement.

The thriller, announced back in February, centers around a veteran who comes out of retirement to help prevent the assassination of the president but ends up wrongly accused of a crime. 

Ryan Phillipe stars in the series, inspired by novels written by Stephen Hunter. Wahlberg is an executive producer on the show, along with Stephen Levinson (Ballers) and Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers).

The network’s decision comes three days after a sniper killed five officers in Dallas during what had been a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest.

On Sunday, Dallas Police Chief David Brown told CNN the gunman, an Army reservist, was believed to be plotting larger attacks targeting law enforcement officers.
