Heavy snow has brought Alpine regions in Germany and Austria to a standstill, with no end in sight. More than 20 people have died in what is some of the heaviest snowfall in two decades, and forecasters say more snow is on the way.

DW’s Amien Essif is on the ground in the ski resort town of Altaussee, which is in one of the worst affected areas in Austria. The biggest fears here are of avalanches, and the only activity is shoveling snow from rooftops.

Parts of Austria and Germany have received new avalanche warnings as heavy snowfall looks set to return. In Bavaria in southern Germany, thousands were working to clear snow from rooftops at risk of collapsing. Fresh snowfall on Saturday, forecast to continue into Sunday, brought an end to a brief pause on Friday.

Heavy snow has brought parts of Europe to a standstill in the past few days, cutting off mountain villages, disrupting transport and triggering avalanches. At least 21 weather-related deaths have been reported across the continent in the last 10 days. dw.com
