Years and years ago, I heard a ‘family story’ told that I still remember clearly…over 50-years now. I had a family relative who had a machine shop in Florida. At ‘the start of the Space Race’, he was lucky enough to ‘bid into’ various NASA contracts…and what was a ‘family business’ became a VERY LARGE business, rather quickly. Branching out, he built facilities at Houston, La Canada Flintridge (JPL) and of course, Huntsville. Him and his wife (my mother’s sister) came to visit over a weekend in late 1968…I was a young teen, and their kids, older than me, were already out of ‘military academy’ and in their first tours in the U.S. Military. We played cards…talked…played more cards (thank god it was Rook and not Bridge!). My father, who at the time worked for a major Aviation company building commercial aircraft, asked a lot of questions of my uncle…like ‘how this works’ or ‘how that can survive’…and he asked ‘Jim’ (my uncle), ‘so, when are they going to build barracks there for astronauts…any plans for that?’, to which Jim replied calmly and succinctly, ‘well, we sent 3 men up who were brilliant, and that volunteered…with an ‘erectable studio’ that kind of favors a living room, with cameras, microphones, recorders, etc….but none of them made it. They all died within the first 12-hours. They suspect it was radiation…there’s no atmosphere there, you know?’ Everyone was silent, the conversation changed…but two things came from that:

You cannot see ‘The Great Wall of China’ from space, contrary to urban rumor…and you CAN’T see the moon lander (though, I think you are referring to the Buggy) from Earth, either. The ONLY proof we have that has been used for ‘see, we’ve been on the moon!’, is the reflective mirrors placed there as a way to bounce lasers off the moon for distance-analysis…and if you think you can’t ‘park a mirror on the moon’ without doing so with a manned mission, you’re kidding yourself.
So…once again, absolute RUMOR is sold as absolute FACT…wow…isn’t that how a LOT of NASA was established (Von Braun once claimed that it would take 108 ships to get to the Moon…as he envisioned it requiring over 100-tons of supplies…and it looking like some 1920′s African Safari effort).
