A Black Panther Encounter:
The North York Moors is incredibly rich in ghostly legends and paranormal lore. With its desolate landscapes, ancient ruins, and dramatic coastal cliffs, the region is legendary for tales of phantom coaches, restless spirits, and the famous “black dog” apparitions. Carl Langley from Orlando, Florida went hiking at the North York Moors and encountered a large black panther walking in the fields. Carl and his friend remained still, hoping not to be seen by the large cat. The panther at some point of time does see them and starts walking towards them. Carl claims that the air started becoming very hazy, as if there were dust particles in the air. Carl says there was no dust on the ground and couldn’t understand why things got so hazy. Carl and his friend slowly started backing up and preparing to run to their vehicle, when the haziness disappeared and there was no panther in sight. It’s noted that many paranormal researchers believe that the black panthers of England may be interdimensional entities. Carl and his friend’s encounter appeared to be an interdimensional incident.

The Phantom Black Dogs (Gytrash):
Specific haunted hotspots and myths across the moors include The “Black Dogs” (Gytrash). The desolate moorland roads are famous for legends of phantom black dogs with glowing eyes. Encounters with these creatures are traditionally seen as omens of doom or as guides for lost travelers. Let’s take a better look at the Black Dogs known as the Gytrash. The Gytrash (or Guytrash) is a legendary spectral creature from Northern English folklore, usually described as a large, shaggy black dog with glowing eyes. It is a famous regional type of “black dog” or hellhound. Gytrash is mostly seen as a black dog, but it’s actually a shapeshifter. Depending on the local lore, it can also manifest as a horse, mule, or even an evil cow. In Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, it is sometimes called a Shagfoal and takes the form of a spectral mule or donkey with eyes like burning coals. Sightings usually happen on solitary, lonely roads at night. Encounters have dual outcomes; the creature is known to lead travelers astray and get them hopelessly lost, but it can also act benevolently, guiding them back to the correct path.

The Phantom Coach:
Locals refer the carriage as “The Phantom Coach of the Moors”. The story is a chilling fixture of Northern English folklore. As the legend goes, the phantom carriage is described as a spectral coach, sometimes drawn by headless horses and driven by a ghostly coachman, that thunders across the remote moors on dark, stormy nights. In British tradition, this apparition is widely considered an omen of death and horrible misfortune. Locals and travelers crossing the bleak, isolated moorlands in northern England, such as the North York Moors and Dartmoor, have reported hearing the distant, frantic gallop of horses and the clatter of carriage wheels before a glowing, supernatural vehicle materializes out of the fog. Sightings of the spectral carriage—sometimes carrying the restless dead—are said to portend a dark future or a tragic passing in the area. Similar phantom coaches are reported across the UK, including a fiery carriage in Norfolk and a spectral mail coach in Enfield. In Coventry, a popular pub named “The Phantom Coach” was built over a marshy pond where an actual 19th-century carriage is said to have crashed.

Hob Hole (Goathland):
In Northern English folklore, a hob is a mischievous, dwarf-like household spirit known for doing farm chores in secret, but who can cause chaos if offended. They were typically described as short, hairy, naked men who lived in fields, farm buildings, or natural coastal caves. The sprite of Hob Hole (located near Goathland and Runswick Bay in the North York Moors) is one of the region’s most famous hobs. Local people believed the Hob Hole sprite had the ability to cure whooping cough (historically called “kink-cough”). Mothers would bring their sick children to the damp coastal cave at low tide and recite a specific rhyme: “Hob Hole Hob, My bairn’s gotten t’kink cough, Tak it off, Tak it off.” To keep a hob helpful, you had to leave out offerings of cream and never spy on them. Hobs strictly despised clothing. Offering them new clothes, even as a polite gift was considered a great insult that would cause them to leave the farm or cave permanently. Much like the ancient “little people” of the hills, the name “Hob” was often used because of an old superstition against calling supernatural beings by their real names.

Whorlton Castle:
The Grey Lady is a popular apparition that is often seen walking across the site. Then we have “The Guards”. The Guards are two apparitions dressed up as guards and they appear to be keeping watch. Visitors have reported hearing unearthly noises, such as screaming, and experiencing intense feelings of dread or being watched. Tourists and locals have seen the Blue Boy, a little boy dressed in blue that is sometimes playing with a red ball or running around down a hall. Then there is a ghost known as “The Cauld Lad aka Roger Skelton. Reports have included the scent of decaying flesh, historically attributed to the site’s connection to leprosy in the 1600s. A tourist once saw the ghost known as The Leper. The Leper is an old man, that walks around with a hunchback and blisters all over his face and arms. A very frightful entity. If you see this entity and scream, it will vanish immediately. Glaisdale & Danby are villages nestled in the moors, and they have their own legends of witchcraft, mysterious standing stones, and the lingering spirits of former residents.

UFOs!
UFOs and strange, glowing phenomena are frequently reported in and around the North York Moors. The broader North Yorkshire region is actually considered one of the UK’s primary UFO hotspots.
