Thunder Bay has a rich, gritty history dating back to the fur trade and silver mining, making it a hotspot for local ghost stories and paranormal legends. Locals and paranormal groups frequently report haunted hotels, spectral figures on hiking trails, and phantom ships across the region.

Some of the most notable haunted spots in and around Thunder Bay include:

The Prince Arthur Hotel:
“Ol’ Harvey” in Room 203. Guests and staff report that a well-to-do man who lived in Room 203 haunts the second floor, often signaled by the smell of cigar smoke. According to local lore, when staff took down photos of “Harvey” in Room 203, the room mysteriously flooded, only stopping when the photos were replaced. Former employees have reported seeing apparitions, including a little boy from the early 1900s, a woman in a wedding dress, and a 1950s-era bus boy in the elevator. The basement is considered the most haunted area of the building, with reports of a former cook who committed suicide at this location. Staff have reported witnessing objects moving on their own. The historic hotel, which opened in 1911, is a staple of local ghost tours and has been subject to several paranormal investigations.

Trowbridge Falls:
Trowbridge Falls in Thunder Bay, Ontario, is widely considered by locals and paranormal investigators to be one of the most haunted places in the region. The forested trails and campground are the subject of several recurring ghost stories and unexplained phenomena. Common paranormal reports and legends associated with the area include Trowbridge Falls Woman in White. The Woman in White is a spectral female figure has been spotted floating across the park’s open grass spaces. Some accounts claim she tells people to leave the area. Then we have The Undertaker. The Undertaker is an entity allegedly haunting the parking lot, known to peer through car windows and violently bangs on the windows of parked vehicles. A local legend tells of a shapeshifting creature (Dogman) that switches between human and animal form along the trails and near the waterfall. Some hikers have seen a Dogman creature, while other hikers have encountered the Deerman. The Deerman has antlers and a humanoid bipedal body. Campers, hunters have encountered the Phantom Runners. Hikers, hunters, campers have reported being aggressively shoved or pushed on the trails by unseen entities, as well as hearing the sounds of footsteps when no one is around. The main bridge leading into the campground is historically cited as an active hotspot for strange voices, feelings of dread, and the sounds of splashing (allegedly tied to past drowning victims in the river).

Silver Islet:
The former mining community of Silver Islet in Ontario, Canada, is widely considered one of the region’s most famously haunted locations, with a history steeped in paranormal lore. The remote island, which once boasted the richest silver mine in the world before being flooded by Lake Superior in 1883, is frequently visited by paranormal investigators and paranormal enthusiasts. The most common reports include The Spectral Ship Captain. The Spectral Ship Captain is a ghostly figure of a ship captain that has been spotted for generations, mournfully peering out from the upper windows of the historic Silver Islet. Locals and visitors have reported seeing another “woman in white” roaming the General Store, walking down the main road, and even appearing on the nearby dock, as if waiting for a lost lover. As you can see there are two Women in White at Thunder Bay, you have the Trowbridge Falls Woman in White and then you have the Silver Islet Woman in White. Another ghost that haunts the Islet is the Stamp Mill Ghost. Dating back to the mining boom days, there are historical reports of a white-garbed figure stalking the docks and the watchtower of the old stamp mill. People camping or walking the area have reported hearing ghostly piano or concert music drifting across the water from when early miners held concerts on Sunday afternoons.

Alexander Henry Museum Ship:
This decommissioned Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, permanently docked at the waterfront, is the source of many eerie tales, with visitors and crew reporting unexplained footsteps and shadowy presences in the wheelhouse. Tourists, locals have made claim that they have seen ghostly sailors on the ice breaker and have heard the words: “Prepare to tack!” “Ahoy!” and “Man Overboard!” Ontario Spectral Chasers have captured several EVPs while investigating the ice breaker. The group captured an EVP that said: “man overboard!”
