Before I retired, I had a government job that would send me out to various cities to perform various tasks. When arriving to a city, I would purposely find a hotel that had a reputation of being haunted. While my colleagues would stay at fancy 5-star hotels, I usually stayed at an older rundown hotel to see if the hotel is truly haunted. In a few cases, I wasn’t disappointed. I made a list of 10 haunted hotels that paranormal investigators should visit and investigate.

THE ALGONQUIN HOTEL, TIMES SQUARE
The legendary The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection and its famous Blue Bar are widely reputed in urban lore to be haunted, largely by the literary spirits of the Roaring ’20s. Folklore long held that acerbic wit and Round Table member Dorothy Parker haunted the hotel and bar where she and her cohort once congregated. Lore enthusiasts and historians note that reports of Parker’s active ghost went quiet after her earthly remains were finally laid to rest beside her family in 2020, ending her supposed decades-long vigil at the landmark. Visitors and paranormal investigators often claim the entire historic hotel space retains the vibrant, restless energy of its past artistic patrons. Guests have occasionally shared tales of strange elevator anomalies or sudden cold spots throughout the historic property.

CAROUSEL BAR & LOUNGE AT HOTEL MONTELEONE IN NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
The Carousel Bar & Lounge inside the historic Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans is widely reputed to be haunted, with visitors and staff reporting paranormal phenomena tied to the wider landmark. While the rotating bar itself opened in 1949, the 19th-century hotel is famous for sightings of a toddler named Maurice Begere, friendly child spirits on upper floors, and phantom employees. Patrons and staff near the Carousel Bar & Lounge have occasionally reported anomalous cold spots, strange sounds, and apparitions moving from the lobby into the seating areas.

LON’S LAST DROP – THE HERMOSA INN: PARADISE VALLEY, ARIZONA
LON’s Last Drop at The Hermosa Inn is widely reputed by staff, guests, and local lore to be haunted. The hauntings are attributed to the property’s original builder and namesake, the eccentric cowboy artist Alonzo “Lon” Megargee. He built the adobe structure as his home and studio in the 1930s, and legend says he never truly left. Staff and visitors have reported seeing a tall shadow or a full-apparition figure of a man wearing a cowboy hat lingering in the bar, kitchen, and foyer areas. Staff have reported glasses and bottles flying off shelves or breaking on their own, pots tumbling in the kitchen, and doors closing by themselves. Guests inside the LON’s Last Drop bar area have reported feeling sudden, unexpected light touches—such as a tap on the head—when no one else is near. Beyond Lon himself, some ghost stories around the grounds include sightings of a woman in a pink dress near the property’s bridge.

THE MAYFLOWER PARK HOTEL
The Mayflower Park Hotel housing Oliver’s Lounge in Seattle, Washington is widely considered haunted by local ghost lore. One of their famous ghosts is the 11th-Floor Prankster. The 11th Floor Prankster hangs out at Room 1120. He is a mischievous spirit (reportedly an older gentleman who lived at the hotel long ago) known to move objects, create a feeling of being watched, and play tricks on staff—such as moving a mop bucket to an entirely different floor. Then you have the Sleep-Watcher. Guests on other upper floors have reported waking up to see the apparition of an older man standing or floating near their beds.

THE MISSION INN HOTEL & SPA: RIVERSIDE, CA
The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa in Riverside, California is widely reputed by ghost hunters and local lore to be haunted, though there is no scientific proof. The historic underground tunnels—originally built by founder Frank Miller to house his extensive art collection rather than bodies—are frequently rumored to feature phantom noises, echoing footsteps, and disembodied voices or screams. Visitors and paranormal enthusiasts swap stories of unexplained cold spots, objects moving on their own, floating blue orbs, and phantom singing or music echoing from empty rooms. A popular ghost is Aunt Alice. Some lore points to specific legacy spaces or doors associated with ghostly artist whispers or presences believed to be Aunt Alice. Skeptics note these rooms often yield entirely normal experiences upon investigation. On Reddit, opinions are mixed: while some guests report feeling an eerie, heavy atmosphere in certain historic hallways or hearing faint unusual noises, many others stay and work at the landmark without witnessing any paranormal events. I guess the only way to find out is to actually visit this location and conduct a paranormal investigation.

THE ROUND ROBIN BAR: WILLARD INTERCONTINENTAL: WASHINGTON D.C.
The Round Robin Bar inside the historic Willard InterContinental Washington, D.C. is frequently included in local lore and ghost tours as a haunted location. Legend says the ghost of President Grant—who was a frequent patron of the hotel and the bar during his lifetime. Now his ghost still lingers around the property, with some stories placing his apparition in the lounge enjoying a ghostly cigar and drink. The broader Willard Hotel is famous for ghost stories, including reports of a young boy who haunts the elevators and the spirit of Civil War-era figures.

THE WORT HOTEL / SILVER DOLLAR BAR: JACKSON, WYOMING
The Wort Hotel and its famous Silver Dollar Bar are widely reputed by locals and ghost tour guides to be haunted. The most famous resident spirit is Robert “Bob” Tomingas, a beloved maintenance engineer who worked at the hotel starting in 1950 (the same year the Silver Dollar Bar opened). He was a mechanical wizard who often slept by the boiler during freezing winter nights. Staff and modern engineers still attribute unexplained maintenance help—like tools mysteriously appearing or the maintenance shop being rearranged—to friendly “visits” from Bob. Legend also speaks of young children—frequently tied in lore to a tragic historical event at the hotel in the 1960s—who are occasionally reported by guests and outside onlookers playing or wandering the upper hallways and second-floor windows, only to vanish when investigated.

THE HILTON CINCINNATI NETHERLAND PLAZA: CINCINNATI, OHIO
The Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza is widely considered one of Cincinnati’s most haunted hotels, though the specific legends center on the building’s historic upper levels and mezzanine areas. A famous ghost is The Lady in Green. The hotel’s most famous spirit is said to be the wife of a laborer who fell to his death during the building’s construction in 1930–1931. Legend says her husband’s body was never found (having supposedly fallen into wet concrete), and her ghost wanders the halls searching for him. Most ghostly encounters, cold spots, and spectral sightings of the “Lady in Green” or a phantom bellhop are reported near the iconic Hall of Mirrors, the Mezzanine level, and guest elevators, rather than the ground-floor lounge areas.

THE MENGER BAR: SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS
The Menger Bar inside the historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio is widely reputed by ghost hunters, staff, and visitors to be haunted. The most famous spectral resident reported in the Menger Bar is former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt famously used the bar in 1898 to recruit his “Rough Riders” for the Spanish-American War. Legend says his ghost still appears sitting at the bar or scanning the room the way he did during life, with staff members historically reporting startling encounters with his phantom figure. Opened in 1859, the Menger Hotel is the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Mississippi River and sits adjacent to the Alamo. The entire property is claimed to house over 30 different spirits, most notably Sallie White, a chambermaid murdered on-site in 1876, and cattle baron Captain Richard King.

THE TAVERN AT BEEKMAN ARMS: RHINEBECK, NEW YORK
The Tavern at Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck, New York, is widely reputed by ghost story enthusiasts and folklore to be haunted, though local opinions on the actual presence of spirits vary. Operating since 1766 as part of America’s oldest continuously running inn, the historic building has centuries of foot traffic from notable figures like George Washington and Alexander Hamilton. Ghost hunters and visitors frequently report seeing shadowy figures in the hallways and distinct human forms lingering in older rooms. Numerous paranormal accounts claim that photographs taken inside the historic tavern and surrounding inn often capture unexplained orbs.

THE HILTON BATON ROUGE CAPITOL CENTER
The Tunnel speakeasy and its parent building, the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center (formerly the Heidelberg Hotel), are heavily tied to local ghost stories and rumors of paranormal activity. The underground passage was famously built in the early 1930s and linked old downtown hotels. Legend says volatile Louisiana Governor Huey P. Long used it to dodge the press and visit associates. A popular ghost is the 10th Floor Apparition. While ghost tales place Long’s spirit roaming the hotel’s 10th floor—where witnesses claim they smell cigar smoke or see a suit-clad figure vanish—recent renovations to the basement tunnel have sparked new spooky lore. Staff members have reported seeing dark, shadowy figures moving through the windowless, pitch-black underground corridors. Workers have shared bizarre claims of flickering lights, sudden temperature drops, and even being inexplicably grabbed on the leg while inside the subterranean space.
