MILLENNIUM BILTMORE HOTEL: LOS ANGELES
The historic Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles is widely considered by ghost hunters and urban legends to be haunted, largely due to its rich 1920s Hollywood history and a famous true-crime association.
The Black Dahlia:
The hotel’s Biltmore Sukkah/bar area is famously known as the last place Elizabeth Short (the Black Dahlia) was seen alive in January 1947 before her tragic and unsolved murder. Legend says her spirit lingers around the upper floors and elevators. Special Note: Elizabeth Short’s grave is at the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, CA. I brought some of my paranormal investigators to her grave site, because some people claim they see an orb flying around Elizabeth’s grave. Lonnie Milay from Berkeley says he saw a floating mist near Elizabeth’s grave. My team did some EVP sessions at Elizabeth’s grave. We did not get any messages from Elizabeth, but did get an EVP from a male voice that said to one of my female investigators, the following: “Your red hair is nice.” There seems to be a male ghost hanging around Elizabeth’s grave.
The 9th Floor Girl:
Guests and staff report hearing the sound of a young girl giggling, running, or playing hide-and-seek down the ninth-floor corridors. One of the female guests said that they felt a child’s soft hand touch their hand. The female guest was a bit freaked out feeling a child’s hand on her hand. The female guest now thinking about it, feels the little girl ghost wanted to hold her hand.
The Rooftop Boy:
Maintenance workers have shared unsettling tales of encountering a mysterious, faceless boy near the roof and HVAC equipment.
The 2nd Floor Nurse:
Spectral sightings of a nurse pacing near historical ballrooms and locked-off sections have also been reported.
THE BILTMORE HOTEL, MIAMI: CORAL GABLES
The Biltmore Hotel, Miami: Coral Gables is widely considered one of the most haunted hotels in Florida, with a long-standing reputation for paranormal activity tied to its dramatic history.
Thomas “Fatty” Walsh:
The most famous spirit is a 1920s mobster and gambler who was shot and killed during a dispute in a 13th-floor suite. Guests and staff frequently report seeing his apparition in period clothing, smelling phantom cigar smoke, or experiencing elevators mysteriously stopping on the 13th floor. Paranormal investigators have determined that the activity with Thomas “Fatty” Walsh is residual energy and not intelligent.
World War II Spirits:
During WWII, the luxury resort served as a 1,200-bed military hospital. Visitors report seeing ghostly figures of injured soldiers and nurses wandering the halls or hearing the echo of marching boots.
IMPERIAL HOTEL: CRIPPLE CREEK, COLORADO
The historic Imperial Hotel in Cripple Creek, Colorado, is widely rumored to be one of the most haunted buildings in the state. Built in 1896, the Victorian-era building features numerous stories of ghostly encounters, strange noises, and lingering spirits from its gold-mining past.
George Long:
The ghost of the hotel’s early 20th-century owner, who tragically fell to his death near the basement stairs, is said to wander the halls and the casino area. Moans and groans have been heard by the basement stairs.
Alice Long:
Tales suggest his mentally troubled daughter, whom the family once kept in an adjacent apartment, still haunts the area now known as the Red Rooster Bar, with staff reporting scratching sounds at the door.
Disembodied Sounds:
Visitors and staff report hearing phantom slot machines and clinking coins after closing, cold spots, and mysterious footsteps.
THE JOHN SOWDEN HOUSE: LOS ANGELES:
The John Sowden House in Los Angeles has a dark reputation and is widely rumored to be haunted, largely due to its striking Mayan-temple architecture and its association with the infamous, unsolved 1947 Black Dahlia murder.
The Black Dahlia Connection:
The house was once owned by Dr. George Hill Hodel, a prominent Los Angeles physician who was a prime suspect in the murder of Elizabeth Short (“The Black Dahlia”). Hodel’s own son later asserted that the heinous crime took place inside the residence.
Maybe Haunted?
Designed in 1926 by architect Lloyd Wright (son of Frank Lloyd Wright), the house’s imposing facade resembles both a Mayan pyramid and the open jaws of a great white shark, earning it the local nickname “Jaws House”. Ghost hunters and lore enthusiasts claim the estate emits an unsettling, heavy aura. Tales of phantom cold spots, shadowy figures, and unexplained noises are frequently shared in paranormal circles. Historians and subsequent owners note that claims of murders happening on the property remain unproven allegations. Opinions on its haunted status are mixed, with many attributing its eerie reputation more to Hollywood sensationalism and its menacing architecture than actual supernatural activity.
THE MENGER HOTEL: SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS
The historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio, Texas—opened in 1859 next to the Alamo—is widely considered one of the most haunted hotels in the state. Legend says dozens of spirits roam its halls, fueled by its long, dramatic history.
Sallie White:
A 19th-century chambermaid murdered by her husband. She is the hotel’s most frequently seen apparition, often reported carrying cleaning supplies. Sallie White is sometimes seen cleaning the windows. As soon as she is seen, she will vanish.
Teddy Roosevelt:
The former president famously used the Menger Bar to recruit his Rough Riders. Guests claim his phantom still orders a drink there.
Captain Richard King:
The founder of the famous King Ranch died in the hotel in 1885 and is occasionally spotted in his old suite.
The Ghost Bride & Others:
Sightings include a tragic woman in a wedding dress near the ballroom and a mysterious young boy in the Victorian wing. Phantom footsteps, knocking, and sliding doors. Sudden cold spots and phantom cigar smoke in non-smoking spaces. Activity centers heavily around the original 19th-century Victorian section and the King Ranch Suite.
