There are places that have an instant reputation of being haunted. We all want to know what happens to a person after death. Is there an afterlife? What are ghosts? Our curiosity sometimes gets the better of us. We start seeking places that are known to be haunted, we hear the stories, we want to know more, and we decide to check these places out for ourselves. Here are 5 locations that are known to be extremely haunted, the legends of these places never die.

Château de Brissac:
Chateau de Brissac is widely considered one of France’s most famously haunted castles, known primarily for the legend of the Green Lady (la Dame Verte). The ghost known as the Green Lady is believed to be Charlotte de Brézé, an illegitimate daughter of King Charles VII and Agnes Sorel. In the 15th century, her husband, Jacques de Brézé, discovered her having an affair with a local huntsman and brutally murdered them both inside the castle. She is described as wearing a distinct green dress, and witnesses over the centuries have claimed her face resembles a decomposing corpse with gaping holes for her nose and eyes. Visitors and family members report seeing her spectral form wandering the tower room of the chapel. Eerie, disembodied moans and wails are frequently reported echoing through the grand halls and corridors in the early morning hours. Sylvie Valtille, a tourist encountered the Green Lady in the hallways of Chateau de Brissac and claims that the Green Lady was making gurgling sounds and her green dress had blood stains. Sylvie was terrified at what she saw and fell to the floor and the Green Lady slowly faded away. Sylvie says the scene was horrific and has no plans to ever visit the Chateau de Brissac.

Bhangarh Fort:
Bhangarh Fort is known for its famous ghost legends, strict night entry bans, and historical abandonment. One of the legends is the Sorcerer’s Curse. A local magician named Singhia tried to use black magic to make Princess Ratnavati love him. The plan failed when she threw an enchanted potion bottle at a boulder, which rolled back and crushed him to death. Before he died, he cursed the town that no one would live there in peace. Some locals claim that they have seen the ghost of the Sorcerer and he looks like he is angry and yelling at something, but people can’t hear his voice. His mouth moves, but no sound comes out of his mouth. The sighting of the Sorcerer usually lasts only for a minute. Another legend is the Sadhu’s Warning. This tale involves a holy man named Balu Nath who allowed the fort to be built as long as no building cast a shadow on his home. When the fort grew too tall and shaded his space, he cursed the entire area to ruin. Historians note that the 17th-century town was likely abandoned due to real events like wars, economic shifts, and a severe famine in the late 1780s rather than a curse. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) forbids visitors from staying at the Bhangarh Fort after sunset and before sunrise. This rule is meant to protect the historical ruins and keep people safe from wild animals in the nearby forest, rather than official ghost activity. The locals say otherwise.

Leap Castle, Ireland
Leap Castle is widely considered to be Ireland’s most haunted castle and has a long, dark reputation for paranormal activity. Located in County Offaly, it dates back to the early 1500s (or late 13th century according to some accounts) and was built by the violent O’Carroll clan. The Bloody Chapel was named for a brutal family betrayal where one brother (a priest) was murdered by another right at the altar. The Oubliette was a hidden dungeon drop-hole where prisoners were left to starve; when the floor was cleared later, cartloads of human bones were allegedly found inside. A terrifying, ancient, non-human spirit that smells of rotting flesh and decay is known as the Rotting Flesh Elemental. You also have the Red Lady. A female specter reported to carry a dagger. The Little Girls are apparitions of two children named Emily and Charlotte who are said to haunt the halls.

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, Weston – West Virginia
The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia, is widely regarded as one of America’s most haunted locations, famous for reported apparitions, disembodied voices, and aggressive shadow figures in its 19th-century gothic stone halls. Opened in 1864 as the Weston State Hospital, it was designed by architect Thomas Kirkbride to use therapeutic architecture and natural light to heal the mentally ill. Built to hold only 250 patients, poor funding and societal changes caused extreme overcrowding, peaking at over 2,400 patients by the 1950s. Decades of harsh conditions, understaffing, and desperate medical treatments led to its final closure in 1994. The spirit of a young girl named Dorothy is said to have been born at the facility and died of pneumonia at age nine. Visitors often leave toys in her room. Then you have an entity known as The Creep. This entity is reported on the fourth floor and Ward R, known for allegedly moving close to the ground or hugging walls. Frank and Larry are playful fourth-floor spirits who allegedly interact with tour guides or respond to jokes.

Beechworth Lunatic Asylum – Victoria, Australia
Beechworth Lunatic Asylum (also called Mayday Hills) in Victoria, Australia, is widely considered one of the most haunted and infamous paranormal sites in the country. Opened in 1867 and closed in 1995, over 9,000 recorded deaths occurred during its 128 years of operation, with many patients buried in unmarked graves. Popular legends include the apparition of a compassionate staff member named Matron Sharpe, then you have a wandering male doctor in the corridors, and the ghost of a groundskeeper named Arthur. People frequently report hearing hazy children’s voices, feeling sudden cold spots, or experiencing physical touches and menacing atmospheres in the former criminally insane wards. Tourist Edward Danger from Auckland, New Zealand says when visiting Beechworth, he got severely pinched on his arm, which left a bruise that lasted 4 days. The bruise was 4 inches in length and 3 inches in width. Edward says that when the pinch was taking place, he could feel a warm breath on his neck. When Edward yelled, the pinch finally stopped. The pinch caused a throbbing pain.
