“Kilmainham Gaol (Irish: Príosún Chill Mhaighneann) is a former prison in Kilmainham, Dublin. Opened in the late 18th century as the County of Dublin Gaol, it is now a museum run by the Office of Public Works. Many Irish revolutionaries, including the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising (Patrick Pearse, James Connolly, Tom Clarke, Seán Mac Diarmada, Joseph Plunkett, Éamonn Ceannt, Thomas MacDonagh), were imprisoned and executed in the prison by the orders of the UK Government.”

Kilmainham Gaol Prison is haunted. From my time as a paranormal investigator, I would say that all jails, prisons, military bases and hospitals are haunted. This former prison has paranormal activities of lights which often turn themselves on and off in the prison’s chapel, Unseen forces have pushed people. People hear disembodied footsteps walking down the corridors. Past employees say that they felt like they were being watched. Entities in this prison at times are aggressive and will push people over or push people into other people. People hear unexplained bangs and disembodied voices. At times horrendous screams and blood curdling moans are heard.

Some of the paranormal hotspots at Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin, Ireland, are several dark cells, execution yard, chapel, and the prison’s long corridors. Here is a list of the activity at this prison.

MYSTERIOUS CHAPEL LIGHTS
One of the best-known haunting accounts dates to the 1960s, during restoration work. Dan McGill, the governor overseeing the site, reportedly noticed that the chapel lights kept switching back on after he had turned them off. When he returned to investigate, he reportedly found nothing unusual. Workers at this prison have also seen glowing orbs floating around the prison. The orbs are seen with the naked eye. Danny McCormick, renovation worker saw a yellowish colored orb going in and out of a prison cell. The orb then bounced off Danny’s stomach and Danny felt a strange vibration in his torso area. When the vibration stopped, he felt a quick sharp pain, like he just got stabbed. After this experience, Danny did not return to work for 3 days. The experience shook Danny up.

PHANTOM FOOTSTEPS AND DISEMBODIED VOICES
Stories associated with the prison describe unexplained footsteps, banging noises, slamming cell doors, and voices seemingly coming from empty areas. Some legends attribute these sounds to prisoners who supposedly remain at the Gaol after death. Some people have heard disembodied footsteps come down the corridors and stop at exactly at the spot where they may be standing at. Some people say they can hear someone breathing and feel a coldness on their bodies.

THE GHOSTS OF EXECUTED IRISH REVOLUTIONARIES
Kilmainham Gaol is closely associated with the execution of leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. People have claimed that they have seen the full body apparitions of these executed prisoners lurking about. William McDaniels who worked at the castle claims he saw the apparitions of 2 men that appeared to be fighting each other. The sighting lasted for a very short time and then the fighting apparitions just vanished.

GHOSTLY ATTACK IN THE DUNGEON
A published haunting incident describes a painter working in the prison’s dungeon during the restoration period who was allegedly struck or pushed by an invisible force and eventually pushed into the wall with incredible force. Some workers believe that there are demons that hide in some of the cells. Some workers have actually seen red eyes looking at them, from a dark cell. In some cells, workers have seen rats that appear to be looking at something and then scramble away like they are scared.

Kilmainham Gaol has seen many tragedies, plenty of violence and a multitude of violent deaths. With this type of negative energy being generated from this prison, it will have plenty of residual hauntings. These negative acts will replay itself over and over again. The hauntings will continue into eternity. The haunting history of this prison started in 1796 in which men, women, children, ordinary criminal prisoners, and political prisoners found themselves in the muggy cells of this notorious prison. Its history includes severe living conditions, political imprisonment, and numerous executions. It closed as a functioning prison in the early twentieth century and is now a museum.
