End of Wikipedia

Kolga Manor (Kolga Mõis) in Estonia is considered one of the country’s most haunted manor houses because of centuries old ghost stories involving a cruel manor mistress, mysterious rooms, and tales of violence and suffering. What makes this location especially fascinating is that folklorists have documented these legends in historical interviews and folklore archives. The stories continue to the present day.

Kolga Manor is known for 4 ghostly stories. Below are the stories.

Cruel Manor Mistress Ghost
One of the best-known stories concerns a cruel manor lady who allegedly took pleasure in having enslaved or or had subordinate people severely beaten. Visitors have heard the sounds of a whipping. Other sounds that are heard is of a man crying and a man yelling “peatus”, which means stop in the Estonian language. According to a recollection recorded in 1939 from a former manor servant named Julie Mikenberg, the woman’s spirit appeared in her bedroom after the mistress died. The apparition reportedly stood behind a curtain at the foot of the bed, with only her white silk shoes visible beneath it. Sometimes a wicked female laughter is heard.

The Hellish Third-Floor Room
Another disturbing legend concerns a room on the manor’s third floor that was traditionally kept off-limits. In the servant’s account, the ghostly mistress reportedly entered this part of the building and retrieved a bundle resembling a baby.
She allegedly held it to her chest and said words suggesting that she had been forced to do something terrible. The story never establishes exactly what happened to the child. There have been reports of a ghostly disfigured baby seen on the floor crying. As you approach the baby, the baby disappears. It is theorized that perhaps the ghostly mistress violently hit the child and the ghostly child passed away. According to a psychic medium that has visited the manor, they believe that the child’s soul is entrapped at the manor.

The Fiery Eyed Witch Known as Red
Local folklore also tells of a sinister, red-haired woman described as a witch who despised men. According to the legend, she would bite a man, who would then die a year later. Some men who have visited the manor or worked at the manor claim that they have been scratched by Red. Margus Rebane once visited the manor and was walking outside of the manor. Margus encountered Red and she was whispering in his ear. Red then bit Margus earlobe real hard and Margus needed a couple of stitches. Margus did not die after a year, but was very ill, after one year had past. Margus was so sick, that he thought he would die.

Underground Passages and a Buried Manor Lord
Other stories connected with Kolga involve underground tunnels and a manor lord supposedly buried in a pond. These tales add to the site’s reputation for hidden secrets, unexplained events, and restless spirits. It has been reported that shadowy type of people has appeared and vanished in the underground passages. A ghostly hand has been seen near the pond. The ghostly hand came from the ground and then vanished. A visitor named Ann claims she saw a ghostly man that was missing his left eye. Ann mentions in her report that there appeared to be blood coming out of the left eye socket. Could this ghost be of an insubordinate that was severely beaten, and lost an eye from a beating?

Why does Kolga Manor have so many ghost stories?
The manor’s long and turbulent history helps explain its reputation.
- Medieval origins: The estate dates back to the 13th century and was associated with the Cistercian monastery of Roma.
- Centuries of aristocratic rule: The manor later passed through several noble families, including the de la Gardie and von Stenbock families.
- War and destruction: The estate experienced destruction during historical conflicts, including the Livonian War and the Great Northern War.
- A deteriorating building: The manor’s neglected condition helped sustain its eerie atmosphere and encouraged stories about its supposed supernatural inhabitants.

Is Kolga Manor genuinely haunted?
There is strong evidence that Kolga Manor has a long-standing reputation for hauntings, including documented oral histories and folklore dating back to the 19th century. A folklorist, Liis Reha, examined archival accounts, newspaper articles, and interviews with local residents.
