6 Cheap Places to Find Appliances is a post originally published on: Everything Finance – Everything Finance – Its all about Money!

Owning a home can be expensive sometimes. This is not only true when it comes to regular home maintenance, but also appliances. After all, appliances are only built to last so long. And when they decide to wheeze their last breath, we know we are going to end up spending some money. I don’t know about you, but I am not a huge fan of spending thousands of dollars on replacement appliances only to have them die in a few years. And that seems to be the running norm these days, unfortunately. Therefore, throughout the years, I have gotten wiser about where I purchase my appliances. So, here are 6 cheap ways and places to find appliances to keep more money in your pocket.

1. When to Buy Appliances

First things first when it comes to buying appliances is when to buy. Of course, not everything in life goes according to plan. But, if you are able to plan ahead of time for your appliance purchase, then choosing the when is extremely important. Buying appliances at the right time can save you just as much money as buying a car at the right time.

Manufacturers release the new appliance models around the same time each year. And when that happens, retailers deep discount last year’s models. So, this is a great time to buy brand new appliances for much cheaper. On top of that, a lot of retailers have their annual white sale in January each year. On top of regular white goods, appliance sales are usually part of these deals. Therefore, January is the overall best time to find great appliance deals.

On top of those January sales, ranges and ovens are typically reduced in price during this time also. This is due to most manufacturer’s releasing new year models of these appliances in January. However, if you are in the market for a refrigerator, May is the best time to get the best discounts. And, if you are in the market for a washer, dryer or dishwasher then September and October are the best times to find these deals.

Keeping these months in mind when you are shopping for appliances can help you save hundreds of dollars!

2. Find Appliances at ReStore

After shopping during specific times of year to net bigger discounts, shopping at ReStore for appliances is my next stop. I found out at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore center many years ago and haven’t looked back since. These stores are all over the country and are a great place to find any household items needed.

Regular consumers and builders can donate household products for resale. ReStore cleans up the items, unless the happen to be new, and then sells them to the public at a deeply discounted rate. In the past, I have gotten cabinets, door knobs, doors, sinks, refrigerators, ovens, drills and flooring from them. But they have a lot more than just those items also!

If you want to find out more about ReStore appliances, then I suggest going into your local store and checking their current stock. It changes all the time and sometimes they have some fantastic deals on appliances, both gas and electric. In fact, the last range I bought was selling new for over $600 and I got it for $120. That’s a ridiculously huge discount!

3. Big Box Stores

When you first begin your search to find appliances, usually big box stores will show up at the top. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. These give you a jumping off point to see which makes and models are available as well as price ranges. Although, I can tell you that I have never purchased an appliance from a big box store at the current face value. Because I am a huge bargain shopper!

Instead, I take a look at their clearance and scratch and dent sections. These areas, both in store and online, typically have much bigger discounts on the same items. Some of them may just be last year’s model, while others might have some small scratches and/or dents. Some of them are simply open box, which usually means they were returned unused after being initially purchased.

A few of the best stores, and places within these stores to look for these deals are:

After you have taken a look at some of these sites, I always suggest going to some of the stores near you to see what they have on the floor. A lot of times, they get new scratch and dent appliances in that aren’t on the site yet. Plus, you have much more negotiating power in person than you do ordering online.

4. Super Clubs

If you are a regular super club (Costco, Sam’s Club, BJ’s) shopper, then you may want to check out their appliance options. As these types of stores are notorious for having great deals on appliances.

Searching on each individual company’s local website, when logged in, will show you the best deals they currently have. But, if you aren’t a member, then you can’t necessarily see the pricing. This is a drawback for me, because we aren’t a member of any of the super clubs. But, my parents happen to be members of one of the chains. So, if you aren’t a member, but know someone who is, it might be beneficial to ask them to take a look at specific products you are interested in. And if the pricing seems worth the annual membership cost, then go ahead and pull the trigger.

Sometimes it will be worth it, especially if there are other items you could potentially purchase there throughout the year for bigger discounts. Either way, it’s worth taking a look so you leave no stone unturned in your appliance search.

5. Local Used Appliance Stores

After you have taken a look at all of the bigger stores, it’s time to shop locally. All of us have some sort of smaller used appliance stores near us, so it’s just a matter of searching. I can tell you that there are 3 bigger local used appliance stores near me currently. These are Discount City, Inc, Capital Appliances and Raleigh Discount Appliances. While I know that these places have some great deals on used and refurbished appliances, they might not have exactly what you need all the time.

Which is why it’s good to do a search regularly and try to get on an email list for any of the local appliance stores that have that option. Or you can call the stores near you to let them know what you are looking for specifically. If they don’t have anything that matches in stock, a lot of these stores will take your information and let you know when they get in a product you might like. I, personally, love this because it makes my life a little bit easier.

While you are doing local searches, don’t forget places such as the Salvation Army, American Veteran Way (I got a refrigerator there for $100 that lasted 12 years!) and local rescue missions. We have a few larger rescue missions near us that have a tendency to have phenomenal deals on appliances.

6. Local Online Groups

And last, but never least, are the online groups. Of course you can search Craigslist, because you are likely to find quite a few appliances there. I have preferred Facebook Marketplace more recently though. And on top of searching Facebook Marketplace, I have joined quite a few local buy and sell groups near me on Facebook. This has actually helped me out more than just the Marketplace because I get more personalized postings.

The other online group I have joined that has helped me find things I need is Nextdoor. Now, a lot of times people are posting about things I am simply not interested in. So the drawback to this one is that you can get a lot more notifications than you might want. Just something to keep in mind.

But, if you haven’t checked any of your local online groups recently, I highly suggest it. You just never know what you might find!
