Woman Gets $5000 In Lawsuit: Claimed NJ Cop Extorted Sex [Picture]

 - The city has agreed to pay $5,000 to a woman who claimed a Bridgeton police officer sexually extorted her over the course of a year.

Shakera A. Brown, a city resident with a criminal record, was awarded the out-of-court settlement Dec. 17 after filing a civil rights lawsuit seeking $25 million in federal court against the city, its police department and officer Braheme L. Days.

Brown’s lawsuit, filed in February, alleged Days forced her to have sex several times throughout 2014 or face a shoplifting charge that could have sent her to jail.

The alleged coercion started in January 2014 and ended in December 2014, the suit claimed.

It began on Jan. 20 that year, when Brown said Days approached her and said she fit the description of a shoplifting suspect.

Days allegedly told Brown she would be arrested unless they could “work something out,” she claimed in the suit.

Over the course of several months that year the two met and had sex at various hotels and residences, the lawsuit stated.

Brown complained about her alleged mistreatment to a Bridgeton police lieutenant at one point, she claimed, but the officer allegedly never followed through with an investigation.

In her lawsuit she demanded a full jury trial.

The case was dismissed on Dec. 4 by U.S. District Judge Ann Marie Donio after motions by Days and the city, who said Brown had failed to produce documents or appear for questioning this summer.

Over several months, Days’ lawyers requested medical and cellphone documents, as well as social media information and answers to an interrogation from Brown’s counsel, which they said she failed to do.

Brown was represented by Philadelphia lawyer Raheem Watson; Days’ counsel was Deborah Rosenthal.

Brown has pleaded guilty to shoplifting in three counties, according to court records.

The settlement contains agreements between the parties to not disclose information related to the settlement.

The Daily Journal obtained a copy of the agreement through the Open Public Records Act because the settlement contains governments or public bodies as defendants.

The settlement contains clauses stating that the defendants do not admit guilt by agreeing to pay Brown.

“This agreement shall in no way be construed as an admission that defendants or any of its officers or employees acted wrongfully with respect to (Brown) or that (Brown) has any claim against any of the defendants or their officers or employees,” one clause reads. “Defendants specifically disclaim any liability to or wrongful conduct against plaintiff.”

Days is still employed by the police department, but on administrative leave for his involvement last year in an on-duty shooting incident.

Days and partner Officer Roger Worley were involved in a fatal shooting on Dec. 30, 2014. The officers made a traffic stop and, in the course of questioning the occupants, ended up fatally shooting Jerame C. Reid.

Reid was a passenger in the vehicle. He was shot exiting the car from the passenger side, where Days was standing.

A dashboard camera video recorded the incident, although its interpretation is disputed. Days is seen and heard telling Reid repeatedly that he would be shot if he didn’t obey his orders. A Cumberland County grand jury declined to indict Days or Worley in the shooting.  00:16
