Ill. Taxpayers Spared from Footing $25K Bill for Blago's 'Mugshot'
While a formal portrait of disgraced and impeached former Ill. Governor Rod Blagojevich (D) still may adorn the south wing of the State Capitol’s second floor alongside, at least the taxpayers won’t be footing the $25K bill to commission it.
On Sunday, Gov. Pat Quinn (D) signed a bill banning taxpayer money from being used to create a lasting memorial to Blago. HB 5109 passed the House 85-23 and cleared the Senate 52-1.
“When originally introduced by Black, the legislation called for an outright ban on official portraits of a governor who has been removed from office by impeachment and conviction,” The News-Gazette reported. “But the bill was amended in the House so that the portrait of an impeached and convicted governor could not be financed or paid for by the state or a state entity or with state funds. If privately funded, though, a portrait could be displayed among the official portraits of governors.”
