Am I Responsible For Changing The World?

The year was 1968, I was a senior in High School in the state of New Jersey.  Our school and nine other High Schools participated in a mock Republican political convention.  This took place two months before the real Republican Convention held in early August.  The main contenders where Nixon and Rockefeller.

I was the leader of our delegation and represented the state of MI. The High School that represented the state of Maryland put on a great show.  They had banners, a band, and tons of posters and were pushing Agnew for President.  

We nominated Nixon on the first ballot and where now getting ready to vote for Vice President.  As the votes where being announced it was close for Nelson Rockefeller but Agnew was starting to pick up momentum.  I asked my delegation if they would keep the momentum going and cast all our votes for Agnew.  They agreed and one by one the rest of the states joined in and we ended up with a Nixon Agnew ticket.

This made news in Maryland and surrounding states.  We never even heard of Agnew until that mock political convention.  In August when the Republican convention came up with the exact ticket I’m sure many of us were shocked.  Since we all graduated in June we never had a chance to discuss it.  We may of had an influence that day since we planted the seed of Agnew for V.P.  the rest is history.
