Saint Mother Theresa of Calcutta

Helping poverty stricken people, primarily lepers in Calcutta, was the major focus of her missionary work. But Mother Teresa received the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway for opening missions all over the world, teaching people about helping the poorest of the poor, and traveling across the planet to help these people.

She is a heroine and a saint to many, not just the Catholic Church.

Mother Teresa, with the help of public donations, opened villages on the outskirts of the city of Calcutta. Lepers could be treated, stay away from uninfected relatives, and live in cleanliness and dignity there.

Being unafraid of leprosy, disease and death, Mother Theresa was often photographed nearby, holding hands with, or hugging the lepers. She made close personal friends out of these dying but charming people.

Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity and the Brotherhood of Charity helped the poorest of the poor. Mother Teresa believed being poor herself was the best method for helping the poor, and so the Missionaries and the Brotherhood refused all luxuries, including eating out.

Even with the many donations and awards they received, they refused to use this money for themselves, and gave much to the poor. They not only opened missions, hospitals, and hospices, but they also used this money to feed them. Some also required medicine, which they readily supplied. Mother Theresa was everywhere, trying her best to serve others.

As she grew older, she resigned as mother general of the Missionaries of Charity, shortly after dying in a mother house on September 5^th, 1996.
