REPORT FROM THE BLOOD BANK OF HAWAII — Blood Bank of Hawaii announced that its board of trustees has selected Kim-Anh T. Nguyen, MD, PhD, as President and Chief Executive Officer of the organization. Having assumed the leadership position for Blood Bank of Hawaii on February 1, 2013, Dr. Nguyen will focus her efforts on innovations that meet the changing needs of patients and hospitals in Hawaii.
“Dr. Nguyen brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the healthcare industry to Blood Bank of Hawaii, and we are thrilled to have her as the next leader of the organization,” explained Lori McCarney, chair of Blood Bank of Hawaii’s board of trustees. “The board and senior management team are confident that Dr. Nguyen is the right person to carry out the long-term strategic plan that serves as the guiderail for the organization to continue to benefit patients in need.”
As a board certified clinical pathologist, and blood banking and transfusion professional, Dr. Nguyen brings in-depth expertise and passion to the blood banking field in Hawaii. She will oversee all aspects of Blood Bank of Hawaii operations, with 120 qualified professional, including nursing, medical laboratory technicians and recruitment specialists under her leadership. Her proven commitment to supporting the community and hospital needs remains top priority in her new position.
Prior to joining Blood Bank of Hawaii, Dr. Nguyen spent the past eight years as medical director of Blood Centers of the Pacific in San Francisco, concurrently serving as chief medical officer of the Western Region for United Blood Services, whereby she led the regional transfusion medicine consultation service and advanced patient safety initiatives.
A clinical educator, Dr. Nguyen has trained other medical residents and fellows, serving as associate clinical professor for the Department of Laboratory Medicine at University of California at San Francisco, and as the program director of Blood Centers of the Pacific/UCSF’s Transfusion Medicine Fellowship. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree cum laude in biochemical sciences from Harvard University and received her doctorate degrees in medicine and immunology from University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Nguyen is highly regarded in the blood banking industry and is a member of AABB (formerly American Association of Blood Banks), College of American Pathology, American Society of Clinical Pathology, America’s Blood Centers: Scientific, Medical and Technical Forum, and American Society of Hematology.
